Brewers Courting John Lackey?

The Milwaukee Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin has had some discussions about bringing Lackey to Milwaukee. Now I do like the thought of him in a Brewers uniform, but the reality is many teams will try and grab him. The Brewers would have to move some pieces to be able to afford to sign him and I do not think they will do that.

Braden Looper is another pitcher the Brewers must decide on as well. Looper presents an interesting problem as at times he pitched well and other times he looked bad and has a 6.5 million option the Brewers must decide on.

Lackey is a starter the Brewers could use, but in the end they must weigh if signing him is worth what you may lose. If the Brewers did sign Lackey they would have to surrender a draft pick which is 14th in the draft. I do not know if I would want to lose that pick. I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens.

Lackey is a Class A free agent but because the Brewers finished in the lower half of the major league standings in 2009, they would only forfeit a second-round draft pick to sign him, not a first-rounder.
