Scooter Gennett Named Top 2nd Baseman in FSL by S2S

I know that is a long title, but it is the only way I could have gotten all the information in there.  The guys over at Seedlings to Stars (a FanSided joint) have been giving the Brewers a lot of love lately.  This week is no different, as James Chipman studied all of the 2nd baseman in the summer FSL league and decided that Brewers prospect Scooter Gennett deserved to be at the top of his list.

You should want to read his article, so here is the link.  Personally, I have been on the Scooter train since I started writing for this site.  Baseball America has Gennett listed as the 4th best prospect in the Brewers farm system.  What is a little disappointing is that it sounds like he has found a home at 2nd base, although he was drafted as a shortstop prospect.

This past season at Class-A Brevard County (the Manatees), he hit .300 and had 20 doubles.  There are some things that James points out in his article, that I would agree with.  Gennett needs to get better at taking walks.  This is something that should be easy for him to improve on since he already has good plate discipline.  Plus, he does not strikeout very often, so if he can get his walks up I think that more hits will also follow.

Gennett does not have a terrific glove, but the move to 2nd base has made an impact on his movement through the Brewers minor league system.  I fully expect Scooter to start next season at Double-A  and possibly cracking the Brewers major league roster by 2014…ish.  We will be keeping a close eye on this kid.  He seems to have all of the raw skills you want in a player, speed, plate discipline, and some flashes of power.

Gennet not only made the S2S Top Players list, he was also named to the FSL All-Star team at the end of the regular season.  I foresee big things from this kid.  Who knows how Rickie Weeks will hold out over the next few years?  It is nice to have a 21 year old prospect in the wings.  If only we had one of those at shortstop…
