While I may not yet be ready to begin discussing the NLCS outcome, I am more than ready to begin looking at where our pudgy first baseman might land next season. We all know that Prince is not coming back. By signing Fielder to the deal he wants, it would ultimately doom the franchise for the foreseeable future. This will be one of the hottest topics to discuss during this off-season. Part of why I am writing this, is to see if my thoughts on this matter change over the coming weeks.

Everyone has their own opinions on the matter, and this is no different. There are teams that I think would be prime contenders, but it’s possible that no one else agress with or believes me. However, I looked at several key factors; 1) Teams with money to spend 2) Teams that need a first baseman 3) Teams history in the free-agent market 4) Teams division strength.

Based on those four factors, there are 3 teams that are serious players and 2 teams that I think could surprise us.

Did everyone like how the title rhymed? No one? Ok, moving on.

Here come the Cubs, a team that seems to be in a state of “rebuilding”. Last week they cut ties with GM Jim Hendry, which was a sign of changes to come. Then earlier in the week they refused to deal Carlos Pena, even though they probably would have received the sweeter end of the deal. Then you have Carlos Zambrano, who pretty much does and says what he wants when he wants. Confusion, panic, mass-hysteria and disenchanted are all words to describe the current state of Chicago Cubs baseball and their fans. Before I get too high on my horse, it was not that long ago that the Brewers looked like this too.

Shaun Marcum got his first victory as a Milwaukee Brewer yesterday, as the Crew finished off the the Braves 4-2. After losing 4 straight to start the season, the team seems to have “Got It’s Groove Back”.

Marcum looked terrific yesterday. His fastball is still lacking it’s usual velocity, but that is probably due to the shoulder tightness he has been experiencing. After giving up a 2-run single in the second inning, he retired the next 8 batters he faced. Shaun pitched 6 complete innings, only giving up 6 hits, and recording 4 strikeouts. Braves batters seemed to have a great deal of problems with his off-speed stuff. Especially slugger Jason Heyward, whom Marcum struck out twice. Marcum is going to be a huge part of our success this season, so it was nice to see him dismantle a powerful offensive team.
