The beaten, bloody and bruised Milwaukee Brewers (44-53) may have just lost the spark in what was supposed to be a turnaround month. The Brewers dealt with getting swept by the Cincinnati Reds and the Philadelphia Phillies and now have a home stand against the NL’s best team in the Washington Nationals (58-39). As Tuesday (the trade deadline) draws closer, so do the rumors and calls about the departure of Zack Greinke and others. The Brewers’ have confirmed themselves to be sellers after losing six straight, so the changes to come will not be pretty. As for the Nationals, their season has been nothing but positives. They sit alone in the NL East with the Atlanta Braves in second and that is a position the Nats would like to retain for the rest of 2012. Led by pitching, the Nationals have shown the MLB they are no joke as each win puts them that much closer to the postseason.

For this preview, I asked Aaron Somers of District on Deck a few questions about his Nationals and their season. District on Deck is FanSided’s blog for the Washington Nationals, so be sure to check them out. Here is what Aaron had to say: (more…)

Something that I’ve been pondering for awhile is how seriously the Brewers and Cardinals honestly hate each other. The comparison strongly resembles that of the biggest rivalry in the MLB, Yankees-Red Sox. Of course we get pretty tired of that rivalry all the time, so there’s gotta be new blood. Well, I think not only last year’s NLCS proved that, but just last season in general. We went 9-9 against the Cards and really, we’re both evenly matched. The rivalry was really put to the test last season with the NLCS, and it didn’t come out in our favor unfortunately. However, 2012 is a new year. With a new year comes a fresh start, so let’s see how this season will play out.

It was a loss that had to be earned.

Even though the race is far from tight, there is nothing more important than beating a divisional opponent in the latter stretch of the season. Games this late – and this important – require discipline, execution and total team efforts. The Brewers managed to do none of these things.

This Brewers and Cardinals series was just goofy. In the series finale, we saw Rafael Furcal and his sub .200 batting average, hit a 3-run home run, Corey Hart hit a lead-off home-run for the Crew, and Casey McGehee almost double his season total by hitting 3 home-runs. McGehee’s 3 homers where his 6th, 7th , and 8th of the season. Talk about playing catch-up. McGehee has been swinging an insanely hot bat since the All-Star break. During the home-stand his batting average was a staggering .360, not to mention that he was 7-for-14 in the Cardinals series. All of a sudden McGehee and Betancourt seem to be coming around, and not a moment too soon.
