Like no other athlete in American History, Jackie Robinson made real and permanent changes in the minds of many Americans during a time when Black Americans were thought inferior and ineffectual.

Jackie’s legacy lives on in every Major League stadium, in Miller Park with the blue ’42′ and gold banner. But it means something much more than that, and it should mean more to the legacy of Milwaukee baseball.

Late last night, the Milwaukee Brewers lost a member of their great family. Dave May passed away after battling cancer and diabetes. He was an outfielder that played 717 games for Milwaukee, and made an All-Star appearance as a member of the Brewers in 1973, placing eighth in that year’s MVP voting. He it .303 that year, with 25 home runs and 95 RBI and led the American League in total bases with 295. But that’s not what he’s most remembered for.

He also happens to be the player that was sent with a player to be named later to Altlanta in 1974, a move that brought Hank Aaron back to Milwaukee to finish his career.

In many respects, he would appear to be a minor footnote in the history of Major League Baseball. But to Milwaukee, he was a stand-out player who worked hard day-in and day-out. To his family he was a devoted husband and father. To his colleagues in baseball he was a class act, a good friend, and a tremendous part of clubhouses in Baltimore, Texas, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, and Milwaukee.

To Brewers fans, he was part of a great legacy spanning 40 years of hard work, dedication, and a very special relationship between a town and its team. He might not have been the greatest player in Brewers history, but he was an important part of this franchise and he will not be forgotten.

Dave May was 68 years old. The hearts and thoughts of everyone at Reviewing the Brew are with the May family at this time.

Perhaps it was fate. Perhaps it was dumb luck. But whatever the reason, I received an email late last week informing me that a new book regarding the Milwaukee Braves was about to hit the bookshelves.

The name of the book was called Bushville Wins! The Wild Saga of the 1957 Milwaukee Braves and the Screwballs, Sluggers, and Beer Swiggers Who Canned the New York Yankees and Changed Baseball. You can check it out here if you’d like to purchase it on your E-Reader, and you can also check out a preview here.

It won’t hit the stores until July 3rd, but from what I was able to read from it and the conversation I shared with author John Klima – also a professional scout, by the way – it would be worth your while to put it at the top of your summer reading list.

What follows is a direct transcription of John’s thoughts and answers about my questions regarding what might have been one of the best teams to ever grace the city of Milwaukee.

This has happened before in Milwaukee – quite a bit actually – but there is something fun about hitting streaks. Especially when you start to climb into the 20′s. You are approaching history.

With Ryan Braun on the precipice of this ocassion – and Ramirez closing in with his own 12 game streak – we’re taking a look back today at some of the best Milwaukee baseball has had to offer in terms of hitting streaks, to see just how far Braun and Company have to go to reach Milwaukee immortality. As if such a title is elusive for a player like Braun. We offer you the longest hitting streaks in the last ten years, plus two extra that every Brewer should aspire to break.

This Weeks Guest:

John Heitz:

John is a contributor for the Fansided joint, Blog Red Machine. John currently resides in Pittsburgh, PA. Blog Red Machine provides amazing baseball insight, as it pertains to the Cincinnati Reds. John also writes a recurring column about a statistic he created to evaluate bullpen success. He happens to be a Dayton Dragons (Reds single-A affiliate and new record holders of most consecutive sell-outs in all of pro sports) super-fan as well. Please keep in mind these were bought and sold on Friday, so John had no way of knowing the outcome of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday’s games. Alot has changed since then.

The way this works is simple. I make 4 realistic statements about the Brewers. John tells me if he is “buying” it or “selling” it. Then he has to defend himself. If it was just a True or False test, then what would be the point.
