It’s been a long road this year for catcher Jonathan Lucroy. He hasn’t played a game since May 27th, sitting out with a broken hand he suffered at the expense of gravity and a fully-packed suitcase.

Last night, Lucroy donned his gear once again, only it wasn’t with the Brewers. It was with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the first of his rehab stints before rejoining the team. An official date for his return is not set but Lucroy himself mentioned on Twitter that the last week of July, up until August 1st appears to be the goal.

The rehab schedule – if everything goes as planned – would have Lucroy back in the Brewers Blue by July 26th.

Welcome back, Travis Ishikawa; goodbye Shaun Marcum.

In a season marred by injuries, the Brewers can add one more name to the list of walking wounded as Shuan Marcum was placed on the 15-day Disabled List Saturday. This comes off the heels of the return of the back-up first baseman on Saturday as well as veteran shortstop Cesar Isturiz, who went 0-3 in a return to the lineup in the third game against the White Sox.

Ishikawa told the Brewers’ Adam McCalvy that he was “able to play without any hesitation or apprehension” as well as “100 percent intensity.”

I know I casually mentioned it in a post recapping the Brewers’ win earlier this week, but it bears repeating: The Milwaukee Brewers have been hit by 29 pitches. To put it in perspective in terms of the National League, you have to add up all the HBP numbers for the Cubs and Diamondbacks to equal the number of plunkings the Brew Crew suffered this year.

Look – I’m not so naive as to think that all 29 pitches were unintentional, nor do I believe that the pitchers who delivered them were purely unjustified. I know there’s a back and forth that goes on during a baseball season, and getting after guys at the plate is one way to gain a mental edge. It’s part of all those ‘unwritten rules’ that baseball players infrequently acknowledge and baseball writers expound on endlessly. So, it must stand to reason that these pitchers are using the HBP to get back at Milwaukee somehow – perhaps retaliating against Milwaukee-inspired beanings?

Cesar Izturis left the Brewers 7-1 win last night in the sixth inning. Izturis strained his left hamstring, and after evaluation last night, he was immediately placed on the 15-day Disabled List. Cody Ransom – the new acquisition from Arizona – will fill Cesar’s spot on the team at shortstop, right after he unpacks his stuff.

That puts the total on the DL up to five for Milwaukee, and while they don’t have it as bad as some other teams, Ransom is the final shortstop on the team’s roster. When asked by Adam McCalvy how Milwaukee would absorb another hit to the position, manager Ron Roenicke said “We can’t.” Encouraging words from the skip.

If you are keeping track at home, that makes four Brewers currently on the Disabled list. Marco Estrada underwent tests yesterday after he had to leave his last start after only one inning after what he described as a “pop” in his quad.

Milwaukee trainers originally said it appeared to be a hip flexor strain, but it turned out to be a strain in his quadriceps muscle. He was placed on the 15-day Disabled List and is now slated to return in mid-June. This means that he will miss a few of starts and, possibly, that the fifth starter slot on the Brewers rotation is cursed.
