There’s really not much more I can say about the Milwaukee Brewers (45-56). Losing nine out of your last ten games…can it get any worse? Well it could, but we’ll try to stay positive for the time being. The Houston Astros (35-68) have just been battered all season and 2012 marks their last season in the NL before converting to the AL West. Both teams are on the fast track to nowhere, but regardless, NL Central ball is still competitive when it comes to rivalries. The loss of Zack Greinke is now here for the Brewers and they head into this series and more without him. Mark Rogers was called up to take his place. For the Astros, they’ll just try and focus on building their team up so they can compete in the AL West next year and for years to come.

For this preview, I asked Greg Thurston, a senior editor at Climbing Tal’s Hill a few questions about his Astros. Climbing Tal’s Hill is FanSided’s Houston Astros blog so be sure to check them out. Here’s what Greg had to say: (more…)

With the NL Central being the strange and wonderful division that it is this year, another look around the teams that Milwaukee is going up against has proven to be a wonderful exercise in understanding the business of baseball.

The Milwaukee brewers go on break for a few days, and they left the first half of the season on a high note after taking down the Houston Astros in extra innings at Minute Maid Park Sunday afternoon.

It was a strange game from a pitching perspective, as Zack Greinke bounced back to the mound after being ejected the night before for spiking a ball after a bang-bang play at first. He only went three innings, but the bullpen shined and shutout the ‘Stros through seven.

Most of the action was thanks to Rickie Weeks, who knocked three hits and drove in two runs as he continued his improving numbers into July.

Please, for once, I’d like to write a recap that actually has a winning tune to it. I’ve written one and only one. So, basically what happened? Randy Wolf had a bad outing, that’s what. I think bad might actually be an understatement, but as always, you have give credit where credit is due and today it belongs to the Astros’ line-up, specifically Jed Lowrie and Carlos Lee. Astros’ starter Bud Norris had a pretty tremendous outing against the Brew Crew, which is unusual considering his prior struggles facing this line-up. While there really isn’t any positive aspect to take away from this game, I suppose the one thing we can be somewhat glad about is that after Wolf’s four innings of work, our bullpen pitched five innings, only giving up one run on one hit (which happened to be a home run to Carlos Lee). We saw bounce back performances lately from Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum, thinking that Randy Wolf would be next. Guess not.
