Major League Baseball did not take to any league-wide celebrations as is done on Jackie Robinson Day, Independence Day, and September 11.

But just because the head honchos didn’t mandate each team to wear off-colored jerseys with the team’s nickname plastered across the chest in Spanish, there was nothing to hold back those players passionately influenced by the cultural movement of Cinco de Mayo.

Let’s take a look at which players celebrated Cinco de Mayo this season by arriving at the ballpark, playing baseball, and leaving donning a sombrero, whether it be the regular, value menu sombrero (three strikeouts), the golden sombrero (four strikeouts), or the platinum sombrero (five whiffs).

Today, the Brewers announced they called up Prince to join the team.

Josh Prince, that is.

Don’t tell that to the guy–we’ll call him “Ned”–at the Milwaukee County Zoo today.

While at the humble abode of the reptiles, Ned was scrolling through his Twitter feed on his phone, when something caught his eye. I have no sixth sense, but I have a feeling he read something along the lines of “Brewers call up Prince after the injury to Aramis Ramirez”.

This made Ned very excitable.

“Holy crap, Prince is back on the Brewers!?!?” He exclaimed to his presumed significant other.

“Prince…?”

“Fielder!” He replied.

She probably should have dumped him on the spot.

I personally have no interest in the WWE or professional wrestling, but there was much talk on Twitter Sunday night of the Royal Rumble taking place (coincidentally taking place at the same time as the Pro Bowl, which received as many “this is so fake” comments from the studio audience).

Good lookin’ John. Good lookin’

Anyway, the Royal Rumble is an annual pro wrestling event in which a large humanity of wrestlers aim to eliminate the other competitors by tossing them over the ropes of the ring, with both feet touching the floor. Apparently, the Royal Rumble is different than the similarly-themed Battle Royale, with competitors running into the ring at predetermined intervals until everyone is attempting to kill each other at once instead of everyone starting in the ring.

For our purposes, we’ll use the Battle Royale, with all our competitors starting in the ring at once. Also, no Alex Gonzalez. He was in negotiations when the rumble took place.

All the talk – along with the absurd boringness of the Pro Bowl – on Sunday night got me to thinking: who would win if there was a Brewers Battle Royale?

I picked out 26 Brewers for our contest, all of which we might see on the Opening Day roster; the 6’6″, fiercely mustached Michael Olmsted couldn’t possibly be left off, so I caved in and picked 26 guys instead of the typical 25-man active roster. In the Brewers Battle Royale, the field was narrowed down to 12, where a seventh inning stretch was implicated, and then the ruckus resumed. Announced by the Bob Uecker, Gus Johnson, and Bill Schroeder trinity.

To the ring!

The Odds Were Never in Your Favor…

Jonathan Lucroy- Mike Fiers thought ahead and brough a packed suitcase, had Martin Maldonado tackle the smaller Lucroy, then dropped said suitcase on poor Jonny Luke’s hand.

Jean Segura- Listed at 165 pounds, I’m honestly not even sure if Jean could take me down.

Marco Estrada- That mohawk isn’t fooling me, Marco!

Marco Estrada: Better at bunting or wrestling? (Image: Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports)

Mike Gonzalez- Naturally, Gonzalez tried taking down all the lefties in the Brewers offense, which didn’t sit over well with Gamel, Green, Aoki, and Schafer.

Corey Hart- Corey was a favorite in this competition after training at the Bear Grylls Academy for Bearded Men this winter, but it’s kind of hard to fight with an injured knee.

Tyler Thornburg- I interviewed Tyler last season and he’s a classy southern kid. Plus, I’m sure none of the ladies want to see his face get depleted by a Carlos Gomez bodyslam.

Taylor Green- Taylor lasted a while before Mat Gamel realized the two are in a race for starting first baseman and Gaby Sanchez’d him.

Wily Peralta- Wily had better things to do, like being our top-ranked prospect.

Logan Schafer and Jeff Bianchi- Possibly the highlight of the entire match, Michael “The Sherrif” Olmsted came out of nowhere, scooped up Schafer and launched him at Bianchi, rupturing the spleens of not only Bianchi, but also those of a crowd watching in utter shock.

Comments on the shirt, boys? Any?

Ryan Braun- Ryan showed up to this fight with a shirt from his tee shirt line on, a pretty-boy shave, his supermodel fiancée at his side, and still manicuring his nails like he was between pitches in left field.

Mat Gamel- Mat took up some time removing Green from the ring, but the Florida surfer-boy saw illusions of the first base foul territory wall at Petco Park and ducked out on his own.

Mark Rogers- Rogers and Fiers aren’t just figuratively battling for a rotation spot: when Mark was busy watching the Schafer-Bianchi scene unfold, Fiers channeled his inner Carlos Zambrano and confused Rogers for a Gatorade cooler. The following events didn’t end too well.

Tom Gorzelanny- In a post-match interview, Rickie Weeks said of Gorzelanny, “he’s not about that life, man.”

The Final Twelve (In order of elimination)

12. Martin Maldonado- Pretty sure the bullpen pitchers trying to not send him to the shelf was the only reason Maldy made it this far. Now that we’re down to 12, however, it’s survival of the fittest.

11. Burke Badenhop- Personally, I like to think of Burke Badenhop as a badass groundball pitcher, and only so much of that translates over to the ring.

10. Jim Henderson- Anyone with this is not one to be messed with. And Gentleman Jim is a good wrestler’s name.

Sweat freezes at 10 degrees. @joe_block #23days Lifting is next! twitter.com/JimHenderson29…

9. Yovani Gallardo- Am I the only one here that wants Yovani to run recklessly around the ring with that mullet and a Mexican flag draped around his shoulders shouting, “Jonrón, jonrón!”? Yes? Oh.

Dandy MIke Fiers. (Image: Frank Victores-USA TODAY Sports)

8. Mike Fiers- Fiers may like to chill on the Florida beaches near his hometown, but a guy who survived what could have been a fatal car crash and rocks a top-three mustache on the Brewers would go far in this rumble. I mean, he HAS to!

7. Chris Narveson- Front Row Amy loves Narv Dog. Your argument is invalid.

6. Aramis Ramirez- Picture this: Aramis Ramirez. In spandex tights. Down to his mid-thigh. Without a shirt. Oiled chest. And big, pimped out, spiky wristbands. You’re welcome.

5. Norichika Aoki- After all the little guys got thrown out of the ring early, Norichika lasted to the final five with his signature move, the Aokie Pokie.

Norichika shows no mercy.

4. Michael Olmsted- 6’6″, 245 with a mustache John Axford envies from time to time. Michael Olmsted balls so hard.

3. Carlos Gomez- Carlos Gomez only knows one speed: all-out. He’d be flying around the ring like it was center field at Miller Park. The Go-Go clothesline would be a work of beauty, and he’d probably tweet a hilarious photo of his match-day apparel.

2. John Axford- The Ax Man is 6-foot-5, Canadian, saves nations with his mustache, and listens to heavy rock. He was finally the one to take down Gomez because apparently no one else remembered he chases the low-and-away breaking ball. Whenever he tossed someone over the ropes, the crowd simultaneously burst into making ax motions with their arms. “I don’t know, I guess that was pretty creative, I think,” said Zack Greinke of the crowd’s ingeniousness.

And your champion is…

Rickie Weeks- Breaking ball to the face? Rickie Weeks ain’t got time for that. Leading the league in times hit by pitch? That’s just how Rickie Weeks rolls. The Brew Crew’s second baseman has a reputation as one of the toughest guys in the league and has the muscular build of a guy who could shred you to pieces in an alley. And now I’m done talking about the muscles of guys larger than me.

The Milwaukee Brewers have had a lot of great moments in their history. None of these are World Series celebrations, but they have had a lot of great moments. I think. I’d like to share some of them with you, but it is more fun to remember funny moments. So here are some moments lacking in the pretty awesome department.

Pete Vuckovich was a dandy of a pitcher. I never saw him pitch because of my youth, but those fancy sabermetrics like earned run average and Cy Young awards tell me he made a lot of wins and got batters out. Which is what pitchers are supposed to do.

Even though Pete succeeded in hurling the base ball, he forgot to zip his base ball pants. Before a big start. In the World Series. Maybe one of his teammates pulled a prank on him or maybe he just forgot like we all do sometimes. Especially with a national television audience.

Not for long.

Caught up in the debate over the 2013 BBWAA Hall of Fame voting that saw no players elected to the MLB Hall of Fame for the first time since 1996–a year when Bob Boone and Fred Lynn were the top first-time eligible players–was the writers overlooking the career of dreadlocked shortstop and 2003 Milwaukee Brewer Royce Clayton.

There was apparently someone who goes under the title of “expert” that thought Aaron Sele, he of a 4.61 career era, 148 wins, 1.50 WHIP, and 1.76 K/BB ratio, is deserving of a Hall of Fame plaque. If this continues to be a pattern, Clayton’s incredibly mediocre numbers may appear under the flashy, among the greatest of all-time category to some completely-deserving-of-the-honor voter.

Though, Royce, the people paid to cover the game recognized not your lifetime accomplishments, we here at RtB take the time out to appreciate everything you did. Especially all that good stuff you did with the Brew Crew.

Royce, we’ve even taken the time out to include you on our Brewers We Won’t Miss team of the decade. Nothing speaks “Hall of Famer” more than that honor. Or that .228 batting average with the Brewers. That’s hard to forget, too.

Here’s to you, Royce Clayton. The BBWAA may give thee no love, but there’s always this: my grandmother will always give you, your crazy hair, and .634 OPS less love than them.

After two weeks of weeding out the weak, the four semifinalists for greatest Brewers team ever are upon us.

To recap last week’s quarterfinal action:

Both the 2011 and 1982 Brewers teams – the top two seeds – advanced, though it took Harvey’s Wallbangers a full five games to defeat against the upstart, Bill Schroeder-led 1983 squad. Hopefully Shaun Marcum doesn’t have to face David Freese so that the 2011 Brewers can do what they fell short of that season: get past the semifinals. Also, Manny Parra was the losing pitcher in game five for the 2012 Brewers. Some things never change.

Before the start of the semifinals, we also made sure the umpires reminded the forgetful, such as Pete Vuckovich, to zip their flies and whatnot before the outset of the games.

To the simulations!

Now that the original Round of 16 teams has been narrowed down to eight, we’re one step closer to naming the top Brewers team of all-time.

Harvey, Paulie, and Robin are still alive on multiple teams in the tournament.

To recap last Monday’s action in the Round of 16:

The top-seeded 2011 Brewers rallied to avoid an upset to the everyone’s all-time fave 81-81 Brewers of 1989. The 1991 Brewers, the twelfth seed, took down the five-seed and (sorta) 1981 AL Central champs. Our beloved 2012 Brewers somehow won and, even more shockingly, Shaun Marcum won the clinching game. Harvey’s Wallbangers advanced, but Team Streak was not so lucky. Lary Sorenson somehow won a game and CC Sabathia gave up a grand slam in a playoff game, something he would obviously never do in real life.

Once again, I tried to keep all scenarios as realistic as possible – such as not allowing a pitcher to start Game 2 then turn around and pitch Game 4, and platooning Carlos Gomez and Nyjer Morgan – even in a simulation that has many given variables toward creating the outcome. I also didn’t have to worry about travel days, so I trashed the stupid 2-3 format Major League Baseball adopted and went with the good ol’ 2-2-1.

Anyway, to the simulations!

Quarterfinals (Best of 5)

1982 was, like, a long time ago. Think about that. If you were around, you probably had some sort of mullet or psychedelic hippie shirts in your mobile van (don’t quote me on the time eras of those fads, I was probably like negative thirteen at the time). Weren’t around for ’82? I’m pretty sure dinosaurs were still walking around in 1992 and remained alive until 1995 when Robin Yount conveniently slayed them right before my birth. Anyway, both 1982 and 1992 were memorable years for Brewers baseball, unless Baseball-Reference decided to lie straight to my face and ruin my entire childhood.

Through 44 seasons as a franchise, it’s difficult to decide which Milwaukee Brewers team was the greatest of all-time. Was it Harvey’s

Oct 7, 2011; Milwaukee, WI, USA; Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez (right) celebrates with teammates after scoring the winning run in the tenth inning of game five of the 2011 NLDS against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Miller Park. The Brewers won 3-2 in 10 innings. Mandatory Credit: Jerry Lai-US PRESSWIRE

Wallbangers or Team Streak? Was it the 2011 team, franchise record holder for wins or the CC Sabathia-led Wild Card team of 2008? Or what about the 95-win team in 1979 that didn’t even reach the postseason?

It’s time for that debate to be settled using the only thing less biased than Hawk Harrelson (I kid, gosh): The online simulation tool at WhatIfSports.

Arranging the top 16 teams–because including all 44 teams would mean we have to acknowledge that 2002 really happened in real life–in franchise history based upon single season records and setting them against each other in a virtual, awesome, totally gnarly bracket to determine which team reigns supreme.
Jaime Garcia and the Cardinals for a 9-6 victory in the first game of the 2011 NLCS.

Actually, scratch that; guys never actually remember any important anniversaries, right?

Just before the Ryan Braun bobblehead on your desk yells at you–a little less threatening than the wife or girlfriend, yes, but not how you want to spend your night–there’s time to run out to the store and buy celebratory balloons to celebrate the Brewers first victory in a LCS game since 1982.

This is not average one year victory anniversary. Milwaukee came back from a 4-1 St. Louis lead in the fifth with big hits from Braun, Prince Fielder, and, yes, the one and only Yuniesky Betancourt. You can’t make this stuff up. Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless eighth (#ThingsWeWillAcceptForKRod) and John Axford hung on for the easy save. (#JohnAxfordSaves).

Of course, the Brewers would go on to sweep the Cardinals and win the World Series in a dramatic seven game series over Texas, featuring a walk-off home run in Game Six off the bat of Corey Hart two innings after he hit a two-out game-tying triple!

hot, injuries had depleted the rotation, and the bullpen was an absolute disaster. How poor had their season been going? Well, the Brewers have reached .500 for the first time since they sat at 9-9 on April 24.

How different are things now than they were on that Tuesday night? Let’s take a look.

Randy Wolf picked up his first win of the season. He finished 3-10 and is now with the Orioles.

Ryan Braun went 0-5. Related: Pigs flew.

Astros reliever Fernando Rodriguez gave up a run, but entered the game 0-1 with a 3.68 era. He’s now 1-10 with a 5.74 era.

The ‘Stros lineup read: Schafer 8, Lowrie 6, Martinez 7, Lee 3, Bogusevic 9, Altuve 4, Snyder 2, Gonzalez 5, Norris 1. On Monday, the only one of those players still in the lineup: JD Martinez.

Alex Gonzalez was 3-4 with an RBI. He tore his ACL two weeks later and is out for the year.

RICKAYYYYYYY.
Rickie Weeks was batting .188. Rickie Weeks is now batting .226, thank you.

Bryce Harper was just another 19-year-old in the minors. Now? He’s a 19-year-old phenom with 18 major league bombs.

Mike Trout was still in AAA. Mike Trout is now an AL MVP candidate.

Corey Hart started in right field. Mat Gamel also tore his ACL and Hart hasn’t played right field since July 21.

The Indians were in first place, the Angels 6-11, and Oakland 9-10. The Indians are 59-83, Los Angeles is 77-64, and Oakland 20 games above .500 and in Wild Card position.

Brad Mills was manager of the Astros. Brad Mills is no longer manager of the Astros.

Carlos Gomez hit a pinch hit homer, his first of the season. Go-Go has a career-high 16 homers and has a chance at a 20-30 season.

Robert Griffin III had yet to be drafted into the NFL. Now he made arguably the most impressive debut in NFL history.

Roger Clemens was still presumed by most to be guilty of PED use. Now he’s acquitted and threatening a return to the Astros…

Brett Favre was retired. Brett Favre is retired. Wait, seriously??
