Deadline Passes, Brewers Stay Silent

In the weekend leading up to the Trade Deadline, all signs pointed to the Brewers opening the floodgates and letting go of whatever contract money they could in order to rebuild for the future. Doug Melvin said in no clearer terms that the Milwaukee Brewers were ‘Open for Business.’

Zack Greinke left for the Angels. George Kottaras left for Oakland.

Then, something strange happened: nothing.

The Non-Waiver Trade Deadline has officially washed over Major League Baseball, and though there were plenty of big deals going down across both leagues – the Brewers weren’t in on one of them.

Hidden Casualties In the Greinke Deal

We’ve talked a lot about the players coming into Milwaukee with the deal that Zack Greinke to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

What we haven’t talked about is the fact that the Brewers actually lost three players in the deal. Of course, we all know the Crew lost Greinke, but in turn, the corresponding prospects forced the hand of Milwaukee to deal out two current Milwaukee Minor Leaguers: Brock Kjeldgaard and Edwin Maysonet.

Better Know a (Future) Brewer: Jean Segura

Well, it finally happened: Zack Greinke, as the whole planet now knows, was traded to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for three prospects.

Rather than dwell on the loss of the former Cy Young pitcher, we choose instead to look forward to the new players joining our ranks.

Normally, Better Know a Brewer is reserved strictly for call-ups, but we make an exception in this three-part series so that we can ascertain the value of the trade.

Spoiler Alert: the value is actually pretty high.

We start with the highest-ranking of the prospects, new Hunstville Stars shortstop Jean Segura.
