The Milwaukee Brewers are currently a top 10 team in total runs scored this season, utilizing contact, speed, and disciplined at-bats to put pressure on opposing defenses and pitchers. That being said, they do have some positions that could be upgraded offensively, with third base and shortstop being two obvious choices.
However, as Milwaukee typically does, they could use an outside-the-box approach at the trade deadline in order to upgrade their offense. One way they could do that is by moving Christian Yelich back to the outfield, as they have been doing more in the last few weeks, and adding a new primary designated hitter.
With Garrett Mitchell out for the remainder of the season, moving Yelich to the field in favor of adding a power bat, something the lineup is lacking even more so now with Rhys Hoskins out until mid-to-late August, could make sense. A move like that would mean that Isaac Collins becomes the odd man out of everyday playing time, but his elite defense would likely keep him on the roster as he could serve as a late-game replacement when needed.
Three primary designated hitters the Milwaukee Brewers could target at this year's trade deadline
1. Marcell Ozuna - Atlanta Braves
As we approach the All-Star break, the Atlanta Braves are looking less and less like a playoff team as they sit fourth in their division and currently have a worse record than the Miami Marlins. With slugger Marcell Ozuna on an expiring contract, he figures to be a coveted target at this year's trade deadline.
However, one area of concern with Ozuna is that his power numbers are down this year, as he is currently slugging just .390. In theory, his value is not all that high right now, and that seems like an opportunity Milwaukee would pounce on.
2. Josh Naylor - Arizona Diamondbacks
As the season presses on, the Arizona Diamondbacks are finding themselves on the outside looking in of the playoff bubble and could look to part ways with players on expiring contracts. One player who fits that bill is first baseman/designated hitter Josh Naylor.
The left-handed hitter is having another tremendous season, evidenced by 11 home runs, 18 doubles, and 58 RBI through 83 games, and should net Arizona a decent haul if they elect to part ways with him. Milwaukee has talent in its farm system to part ways with, but by acquiring a rental, they wouldn't have to dig too deep into their prospect talent in order to get a deal done.
3. Adolis Garcia - Texas Rangers
Just two years ago, Adolis Garcia was unstoppable during the Texas Rangers’ World Series championship run. The now 32-year-old has continued to be productive since then and currently this year has hit 10 home runs, 19 doubles, and driven in 50 runs.
With Garcia's playoff pedigree, a team like the Brewers may be willing to acquire him and have him serve as their designated hitter. Garcia is under team control by means of arbitration through 2026, so it may take a slightly heavier package deal to pry him away from Texas.
Even with Yelich's success as a designated hitter this year, moving him back to the field may be a move the Brewers consider. They already will be without Mitchell the rest of the year. Yelich's move would be temporary, and it may be one creative way to add an affordable bat at the trade deadline.
