With the Major League Baseball All-Star game creeping up on us, the week’s festivities are beginning to shape up. While the Milwaukee Brewers fan base is waiting with bated breath over which big league players will make it on to the roster, the All-Star Futures Game rosters have been announced.

And wouldn’t you know it, a Milwaukee Brewers prospect found his way onto the list. Jimmy Nelson – currently playing for AAA affiliate Nashville Sounds was selected as the lone Brewers prospect on the Team USA roster.

It seems a natural step for Nelson, who has barreled his way through the ranks mainly on the back of his powerful fastball. He began the year in AA Huntsville, but made the trip up to AAA in June. He currently sits at number eight in the Brewers top 20 prospects list.

Nelson – who is currently 5-6 with a 2.79 ERA and 87 strikeouts total between Hunstville and Nashville – is the only player from the Milwaukee Brewers system to make the Futures Game this season which features American talent facing off against International prospects. Although scouts and fans alike often lament the state of Milwaukee’s farm system, gems like Nelson continue to come through the system. Last year’s Futures Game pick from Milwaukee, Scooter Gennett, helped to show that even though the Brewers prospects may not have the highest stock, potential continues to run through the ranks fairly quickly.

Obviously it’s a bit early to tell if Jimmy Nelson will follow in Scooter’s footsteps and start knocking on the door to Miller Park, but it’s a tremendous honor for a job well done so far.

The showcase of young talent, which takes place on July 14th this year, is generally considered a coming out party for prospect talent around the league. While many Brewers fans have been following Nelson’s career since he was drafted in 2010, there are many more who will get their first real look at the right-hander at this game.
