Blazek was acquired by the Brewers from the St. Louis Cardinals for reliever John Axford last September. He made seven appearances out of the bullpen for the Crew in 2013, posting a 3.86 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP.
The 25-year-old posted a 10.80 ERA in five spring training outings, prompting the Brewers to option him to Nashville. The Brewers like Blazek’s arm, and they believe more time in the minors will be helpful.
The bullpen battle is a little less crowded now. Wei-Chung Wang, Zach Duke, Alfredo Figaro and Donovan Hand are still vying for three open spots in the ‘pen. Tom Gorzelanny will start the disabled list, meaning someone will be removed from the 25-man roster when he returns.
