According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, Milwaukee Brewers backup catcher Martin Maldonado has been suspended five games by Major League Baseball for his role in Sunday’s brawl against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Maldonado has also been fined $2,500. Major League Baseball has yet to officially announce punishments, however.

Maldonado came to Carlos Gomez‘s defense after Pirates’ Travis Snider tackled Gomez to the ground. Maldonado punched Snider in the right eye, leaving his face black and blue.

When asked about a possible suspension after the brawl, Maldonado said he wasn’t worried.

“I don’t worry about that,” Maldonado said. “That’s part of baseball. You have to be responsible for whatever happens.”

Gomez is likely to be suspended as well. An announcement from Major League baseball is expected sometime today.
