Carlos Gomez Drops Appeal, Will Start Suspension Tonight
Milwaukee Brewers’ center fielder Carlos Gomez has dropped his appeal of a three-game suspension stemming from a brawl with the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 20. He will start his suspension tonight.
The incident began when Gomez hit a deep fly ball to center field off of Gerrit Cole. Instead of running right away, Gomez flipped his bat and watched it for a few seconds before beginning to run. The ball went off the wall and Gomez ended up at third base.
Cole was none to happy with Gomez showing him up and had a few words with him. This caused Gomez to shout back and before you knew, the benches cleared.
Major League Baseball handed down five suspensions: Gomez (3 games), Martin Maldonado (5 games), Travis Snider (1 game) and Russel Martin (1 game). The league did not discipline Cole.
Some might be wondering why Gomez decided to drop his appeal. Well, he was already out of the lineup tonight with back spasms, something that could take a few days to heal. If he’s not healthy enough to play, he might as well be serving his suspension.
