The Milwaukee Brewers used their Competitive Balance Round A pick, 41st overall, to draft high school shortstop Jacob Gatewood. The 18 year-old became a household name throughout the year with his displays of “batting practice power” en route to this the draft. Gatewood, a native of Clovis, California, is a great athlete but at 6 foot 5 inches the likelihood of playing shortstop long-term seems to be an outside chance. Either way the Brewers were able to acquire a talent in which Jonathan Mayo at MLB.com ranked 22nd overall and Baseball America ranked 21st. Gatewood appears to be signable for the Brewers which leaves his drop on draft day puzzling given his potential.
