Despite homers from Chris Carter and Hernan Perez, the Milwaukee Brewers fell to the San Diego Padres in the series opener at Petco Park. Carter now leads the Milwaukee Brewers in home runs (25).  It was also the first game the Milwaukee Brewers had past trade of Jonathan Lucroy, Jeremy Jeffress, and Will Smith. On the trade Skipper Craig Counsell said:

“Your expectation is that players will be traded, but when they’re actually traded, it hurts, just because of who they are and how much they’ve meant and your relationship with them, as much as anything. So it hurts for a little while, for sure. But you bounce out of it, and you understand that this is the profession we chose and we have to move on from it.”

The Milwaukee Brewers took game two of the series as the Orlando Arcia went 0-for-4 in his major league debut. It was Ryan Braun who gave the Milwaukee Brewers the lead in the sixth, and Tyler Thornburg shut the door on the Milwaukee Brewers. On the bullpen post trade deadline, Thornburg had this to say:

More from Reviewing the Brew

“All the guys in the bullpen who have been pitching in games when we’ve been down, I feel like they’ve done such a fantastic job and they’ve really earned the opportunity to throw in closer games,” Thornburg said. “It’s nice to see guys like Corey get that opportunity, because they definitely deserve it. Torres coming in and closing it out in the sixth and then going back out for the seventh, that was impressive.”

The Milwaukee Brewers were held to low scoring, as Junior Guerra had the shortest outing as a Milwaukee Brewer. Guerra struggled from the start and only pitched four innings on the mound. Guerra did have a challenge go his way, the one sparkle in his performance. On the challenge itself, Skipper Craig Counsell had this to say:

“I wasn’t sure we’d win the challenge,” Counsell said. “But it definitely deviated [Brewers starter Junior Guerra’s] path. They’re interpreting it more now than they were the first couple weeks of the season. We knew they are interpreting it more.”
