Milwaukee Brewers: Grading Lorenzo Cain’s 2018 Season

We continue our grading of Milwaukee Brewers players’ 2018 season with taking a look at how Lorenzo Cain performed in this year’s regular season and the postseason.

Lorenzo Cain was on the Milwaukee Brewers 2010 roster but was then traded to the Kansas City Royals the following season where he made two World Series appearances, two All-Star Game appearances and also won a championship with Kansas City in 2015 and won ALCS MVP.

Cain was then picked up in January by his former team, the Milwaukee Brewers, on the same day as fellow outfielder, Christian Yelich. How did his season go?

Regular Season:  A+

The 2018 regular season was very kind to Cain and his stats are proof of that. In the first half of the season, Lorenzo’s slash line read .293/.393/.427/.820. Cain seemed to be hitting more for power in the first half of the season where he had 8 HR and 27 RBI. You can’t forget the speed of Cain, as well; he was 18-22 (82%) in stolen bases in the first half.

This year, the Milwaukee Brewers sent a franchise record five players to the All-Star Game in Washington D.C. and Lorenzo Cain was among those five. That began the second half of the season and that’s where Brewers’ fans saw their team really make a push for the division title and the postseason.

The month of August was especially good to LoCain. In August, Cain batted .356/.432/.510/.942, but only 2 HR and 4 RBI. His stolen base percentage was 63% (5-8) in August.

Cain was also battling a few injuries in the second half of the season, but his stat line was incredible. Cain’s second half stats read as .326/.398/.406/.804 with 2 HR and 11 RBI. He stole 12 bases on 15 attempts, making his percentage 80%.

Lorenzo Cain finished the regular season .308/.395/.417/.813 with 10 HR, 38 RBI and a stolen base percentage 81% (30-37). Cain is also in contention for NL MVP alongside his teammate Christian Yelich.

Also let’s not forget that Cain was an exceptional fielder in the regular season with a fielding percentage of .981 and only making 6 fielding errors, which earned him a spot as a finalist for a Gold Glove award this season.

Postseason: C+

The 2018 postseason wasn’t as kind to Lorenzo Cain as the regular season.  Fans were starting to worry that Lorenzo Cain was losing his touch or maybe battling through another injury.

In the NLDS against the Colorado Rockies, Lorenzo Cain only had one hit in 12 at-bats.  His stat line for the NLDS was .083/.214/.083/.298 with no home runs or runs batted in.  The top half of the batting order for Milwaukee didn’t perform up to expectations this postseason.

In the thrilling seven-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cain saw his bat start to come out of the slump.  His slash line read .303/.324/.424/.748 with, again, no home runs but one RBI.

Overall Grade: A

Lorenzo Cain was a tremendous key to team success for the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2018 season.  Brewers’ fans would be happy to know that the fun-loving, speedy outfielder will still be in the navy blue and gold until 2022 when he will become a free agent.

Until then, Milwaukee fans will find success this year with LoCain manning center field and being the lead-off hitter in the Brew-Crew lineup.
