The Milwaukee Brewers training staff has been busy for the past few days. Several starters are on the Injured List, and a few players are back from Triple-A.

When a Major League team has two-fifths of its starting rotation on the Injured List, the team is in deep trouble. Not so for the Milwaukee Brewers. Gio Gonzalez hit the IL on Saturday, and Jhoulys Chacin was added on Sunday. The Brewers also added a few familiar names to take their places.

What happened to Gonzalez and Chacin?

Gonzalez was diagnosed with a ‘dead arm’. The rest of him is fine. But his arm? Dead.

He wasn’t said to be suffering any specific pain, but he struggled in his last outing and it’s believed that a week or two on the shelf will help him find the zip that was missing. This issue could also stem from Gonzalez’ late start to the 2019 season.

Chacin has been struggling of late, but tweaked his back during an at bat on Friday. His back tightened up on Saturday, and it was decided that a few weeks off is the best option for him. He’s also really struggled of late, and his ERA sits at 5.74 and his WHIP has ballooned to 1.48.

Anyone else sent back to Triple-A?

Well, Manny Pina was activated from his stint on the IL when Gonzalez was added. This left the Milwaukee Brewers with three catchers on the 25-man roster. Jacob Nottingham was optioned to Triple-A as a part of the roster moves on Sunday.

Who’s called up from Triple-A?

In addition to Pina, the Milwaukee Brewers also brought back Taylor Williams and Jacob Barnes for the time being. Freddy Peralta will assume Gonzalez’ spot in the rotation, while additional moves will be made on Wednesday when Chacin’s turn in the rotation comes up. Jimmy Nelson is expected to get the call when the team needs an additional starter in the middle of the week.

Isn’t Shaw expected back soon?

Travis Shaw will also return soon. Mike Moustakas could hit the Injured List with a fractured right ring finger that was suffered when he was hit by a pitch late in Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Milwaukee Brewers could also option a reliever, or send Keston Hiura back to the farm if Moustakas can play through his current issue.

Next. Is Brandon Woodruff breaking out?. dark

The key takeaways are that Gonzalez and Chacin are on the Injured List, and Nottingham is going back to Triple-A, while Pina, Williams, and Barnes are back with the Milwaukee Brewers. And a lot more moves will happen in the next three days. The Brewers’ depth is getting a test, but they have the available options to play through it without suffering a noticeable drop in talent on the 25-man roster…for now.
