3 Brewers prospects who might get a more serious look after Christian Yelich injury

Last season, in his first year back following back surgery that sidelined him for the second half of 2024, Christian Yelich appeared in an impressive 150 games without a single stint on the injured list. Now, a year later at age 34, he may not be as fortunate, as just 15 games into the 2026 season, the Milwaukee Brewers are bracing for discouraging news regarding a hamstring injury that the former MVP suffered in Sunday afternoon's loss to the Washington Nationals.

Though the team has yet to confirm the severity of Yeli's hamstring injury, manager Pat Murphy noted in his postgame interview on Sunday that the Brewers are, "most likely going to get some bad news on Yelich," suggesting that a stint on the injured list is all but certain. Depending on the severity, it could either mean a short two or three-week stay on the injured list for Yelich or a one to two-month stint away from the team. The Brewers will certainly be careful with their veteran leader, knowing they will need him most for the stretch run of the season in August and September, and rushing his recovery could lead to complications down the road.

That said, the Brewers are already without Jackson Chourio and Andrew Vaughn, and the offense is struggling, meaning this is far from ideal timing for Milwaukee to lose another key piece of their lineup. But alas, the season continues, and as has been the case with Chourio and Vaughn's injuries, opportunities will be opened for other players while the Brewers anxiously await Yelich's return. It might just be the case that one of those players is one of the many talented prospects that the Brewers have in their minor league system.

3 Milwaukee Brewers prospects who might get a more serious look after Christian Yelich injury

1. C Jeferson Quero

With a temporary opening at designated hitter due to Yelich’s absence, this could be the right time to get a longer look at top catching prospect Jeferson Quero, who previously spent just four days in the majors and appeared in one game. Quero could find opportunities by occasionally shifting William Contreras into the DH spot, while continuing to rotate Gary Sánchez at first base defensively (based on pitching match-ups), despite some recent adventures for "El Kraken" at the cold corner.

Quero is off to a slow start in Triple-A with the Nashville Sounds, slashing just .171/.293/.257 through his first 10 games, good for a .550 OPS that doesn't scream "promotion." However, with a spot on the 40-man roster, and a need for Contreras to get more starts as the DH to keep him fresh all season, Quero replacing Yelich on the roster is certainly a possibility.

2. OF Luis Lara

21-year-old Luis Lara is currently the talk of the Brewers' minor league system, as the switch hitter is off to a phenomenal start in Triple-A. As a former minor league Gold Glove award winner, his defense has continued to be strong this year, but he is also off to a .367/.456/.551 start at the plate through his 57 plate appearances. Milwaukee loves to reward players for their efforts, and seeing how he is Rule-5 Draft eligible after this season, adding him to the 40-man now and watching a hot bat play could be the spark this team needs in order to snap their five-game skid.

Another obstacle standing in the way of a Lara promotion, in addition to the fact that a 40-man roster spot would need to be cleared for him, is that the Brewers' big-league roster remains outfield-heavy even in the wake of Yelich's injury. With players like Blake Perkins, Brandon Lockridge, and Luis Matos joining lineup regulars Sal Frelick and Garrett Mitchell, Lara's profile might be redundant if he replaces Yelich on the big-league roster.

3. SS Cooper Pratt

Fresh off a significant contract extension, this could be an ideal, low-pressure opportunity to give Cooper Pratt his first taste of big-league action. Joey Ortiz, who racked up five hits on Opening Weekend, has cooled considerably since, collecting just four hits throughout the rest of April, further supporting the case for Milwaukee to get Pratt into the mix. Notably, Pratt was the first among Colt Emerson and Konnor Griffin -- two other top prospects who have signed major contracts since the start of the 2026 season -- to sign a pre-MLB deal, and with Yelich’s injury creating an opening, he could be the second of that group to make his major league debut.

Notably absent from this group of prospects are Tyler Black and Brock Wilken. Black is already on the 40-man roster, making him a logical option on paper, but he has been on the Nashville Sounds' injured list since April 8. Meanwhile, Wilken, like Lara, is in his final year of Rule 5 Draft protection, but has struggled mightily to start the season, going just 3-for-45 with 22 strikeouts.

Ultimately, Yelich’s absence creates an unexpected opportunity for Milwaukee to evaluate its depth and potentially give a top prospect meaningful exposure at the big-league level. Whether it’s a short-term stopgap or the beginning of something more, the Brewers have a chance to see what they have in one of these players.
