With the 25th overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, the Milwaukee Brewers landed their guy in shortstop Trey Ebel, despite MLB Pipeline high school infielder No. 107 on its pre-draft board. This selection also adds another chapter to the Ebel family story, as just one year ago his older brother, Brady, was taken by Milwaukee with the 32nd overall pick and is currently playing in Low-A with the Wilson Warbirds.

The Brewers' long connection with the Ebel family certainly explains why they wasted no time selecting Trey with their first of four selections on Day 1 of the draft. Both Ebel brothers have played for the Brewers’ development teams in California and Florida, including games at American Family Field as well. Trey also trained extensively with Brice Turang last winter.

With Trey all but publicly confirming he'll sign with the Brewers and forgo his commitment to Texas A&M, there's plenty for Milwaukee fans to be excited about. Here are three reasons why the newest Ebel brother should have Brewers fans excited about his future.

3 reasons why Milwaukee Brewers fans should be excited about first-round pick Trey Ebel

1. Mature approach at the plate

At the plate, Trey displays a remarkably mature approach for a 17-year-old. He takes pride in producing quality at-bats, and MLB Pipeline noted in its pre-draft profile that he may have even logged more quality at-bats than any other high school hitter in this year's class. That disciplined approach has translated against all levels of competition, as he's shown the ability to handle velocity and breaking pitches.

Beyond his advanced swing decisions, Trey is also a bit twitchier than his brother, giving him a higher offensive ceiling and greater power potential. He showcased that ability during his senior season at Corona High School (CA), where he hit nine home runs and 10 doubles in just 31 games while slashing .417/.496/.796.

2. High baseball IQ

While Trey may not possess one standout tool, such as elite power, a plus hit tool, or exceptional defensive ability, which would have pushed him higher up pre-draft boards, he consistently stands out for his baseball instincts.

His feel for the game is evident in the little things, from recognizing a pitcher's approach and making in-game adjustments at the plate to reading opposing hitters and positioning himself effectively on defense. Those instincts and intangibles are what separate him from many of his peers.

3. Baseball family

A major factor behind Trey's advanced plate discipline and high baseball IQ is the environment in which he was raised. Coming from a baseball family, he's been immersed in the game from an early age. His father, Dino, serves as the third base coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers, while his older brother, Brady, is already beginning his professional career in the Brewers' organization.

Growing up around the game at its highest level has undoubtedly helped shape Trey's instincts and understanding of baseball. Now, Trey will join Brady in a quest to become the first siblings in Brewers franchise history to reach the major leagues and play together at the same time.
