The Milwaukee Brewers face another difficult decision with an All Star closer with dwindling team control. Devin Williams is slated to head into his final year of arbitration before hitting free agency in 2025.
A few years ago, when faced with a similar situation with All Star closer Josh Hader, the Brewers opted to trade Hader at mid-season in a move that blew up in their face as the team missed out on the postseason that year and collapsed following the trade that shook the clubhouse. Now, Devin Williams has one year left and right now appears to be the best time to trade him.
That hasn't stopped the rumor from being put out there that the Brewers are willing to hold on to Williams and potentially trade him at mid-season if the 2025 season doesn't go their way. However, the Brewers do expect to compete and if they hold on to Williams into the season, it's likely they'll have to hold him until free agency because they'll be contending at the Deadline.
The Brewers are still going to listen on Devin Williams trade offers and he's sure to have a robust market from teams seeking late-inning bullpen help. These are some of the top teams that are likely to be involved in trade talks for Williams as the offseason goes on.
#1 - Toronto Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays are trying to go all in on winning. They have money to spend and are desperate to compete in the AL East. They fell short in their pursuit of Shohei Ohtani last offseason and struggled in 2024. This winter, they're heavy in the pursuit of Juan Soto and are willing to pay for big time upgrades to help them win.
Toronto also just non-tendered their closer Jordan Romano. Their internal favorite to close games now is journeyman Chad Green. Getting a lockdown closer is going to be high on Toronto's offseason needs list if they intend on competing in 2025. They should be very interested in Devin Williams.
They're also entering the final season of team control for lineup staples Vlad Guerrero Jr and Bo Bichette. Adding Williams would perfectly fit into the window of contention they have and be pushing all their chips in on 2025.
While the Blue Jays may be focusing their more immediate efforts on Juan Soto and a Williams pursuit may wait until Soto's market is settled, their intentions on competing won't change and Williams will help form a dominant back end of their bullpen.
