#2 - Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks fell just shy of the postseason in 2024 after the Braves-Mets doubleheader split to end the year. Pennant winners just a year ago, Arizona has some work to do to get back to that level and a chunk of that work has to come in the bullpen.
They have a talented young reliever in Justin Martinez as their closer, who throws hard, but also struggled in September and tallied just eight total saves. Paul Sewald is a free agent for Arizona as well and he's taking his late inning experience with him.
If Arizona is going to make the leap back into the postseason, they're going to need to figure out their bullpen and adding an experienced arm like Devin Williams would be a great way for them to do it.
Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick has made it quite clear that he doesn't want Jordan Montgomery back in 2025 and they're looking to shed him. If they're willing to eat a large chunk of that contract, perhaps the Brewers could take Montgomery and look to work with him to get him back to his old form. Montgomery signed so late last offseason it likely threw off his entire season prep. Still, the Brewers would need more than just Montgomery and some cash in return for an All Star like Devin Williams.
The Diamondbacks have a number of young hitters and pitchers that could intrigue the Brewers as a return for Williams. Blaze Alexander is one such player that seems to be blocked from a starting infield job but could be a great candidate for the Brewers vacancy at third base they'll face following the departure of Willy Adames and Joey Ortiz likely sliding over to shortstop.
Williams' salary isn't going to break the bank for Arizona and he presents a massive upgrade for their bullpen, which was a position group that failed them down the stretch and led to their missing the postseason. The goal for their front office should be to avoid that same kind of struggle in 2025.
