Breaking down how "real" Brewers Vinny Capra's hot start to spring training truly is

Being out of minor league options, Vinny Capra is putting the Brewers on notice. The 28-year-old had just nine at-bats with Milwaukee last season, but his spring training numbers catch the eye. Seeing as the Brewers are looking for a solution at third base, Capra is taking matters into his own hands.

In his 17 spring training at bats, Capra is leading the league with four home runs. There are nine players across the league with three, but Capra is the only player with four. His four home runs go along with eight runs batted in, all across just seven games. With a .412 average, four of his seven hits have been home runs.

Capra is a power hitter, to say the least. He's had a pair of singles but has a double to go along with the home runs as well. With five of his seven hits being for extra bases, the Brewers have no choice but to consider Capra as part of the Opening Day roster.

Vinny Capra has been a fun story, but making the Brewers roster is a stretch

As previously mentioned, Capra is out of minor league options. During his time in Nashville last season, he hit just eight home runs. Capra appeared in 110 games, accounting for 429 at-bats. He was able to record more than 100 hits in a season for the first time in his minor league career, hitting a respectable .261. The Blue Jays 20th round draft pick in 2018 did also finish the season with 10 steals.

Capra's most successful stint in the minors came back in 2021. His numbers in AA speak for themselves, hitting 10 home runs and putting up 58 RBI's in just 248 at-bats. He recorded 81 hits in 73 games before being promoted to AAA.

The third base competition has mostly come down to Oliver Dunn and Andruw Monasterio. Tyler Black is also in the mix, but Vinny Capra is trying to find his spot as well. With the likes of Hoskins, Turang, and Ortiz in the infield, Capra has his work cut out for him.

One of the big concerns so far in spring training has been the strikeouts. Sure, Capra has hit four home runs, but he's also struck out six times. With a 35% strikeout rate, it seems like Capra could be home run or nothing. The Brewers would love to have that sort of power on their roster, but they also need guys who are going to consistently get on base.

Don't let the .412 batting average fool you. Vinny Capra is certainly a talented player, but he hasn't had the chance to prove himself at the big league level just yet. Sustained minor league success is great, but the Brewers have a strong set of rookies and younger players who they can build themselves around. Capra is far from his prime, and the Brewers can certainly take a chance on him, but it's hard to say that Capra will be hitting like this consistently throughout the summer.
