The Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff has been one of the strong suits of the team since the team's resurgence in 2018. Brandon Woodruff has been one of the mainstays since he made his debut in 2017, and has rewarded Brewers fans with being one of the most consistent arms in all of baseball.

When a serious shoulder injury derailed Woodruff's career just prior to the 2023 postseason, he left the team searching for there primary workhorse pitcher. Corbin Burnes was traded prior to the start of the 2024 season, and Freddy Peralta has been pretty good in the absence of the other two. The team has gotten reliable work from guys like Tobias Myers, Aaron Civale, and Colin Rea among others in the interim but they simply haven't been to the caliber of Woodruff.

Most updates during Woodruff's rehab from shoulder surgery have been positive. He has checked all the boxes he has needed to check and expressed optimism that he would be back on the mound for Milwaukee sooner rather than later right before the start of camp. Now, it sounds like Woodruff has progressed enough to make the next and most crucial step towards starting games that count for the Brewers again.

Brandon Woodruff currently tabbed to make Cactus League debut on Sunday

Woodruff made a start against the Padres' minor leaguers on Tuesday afternoon, throwing 27 pitches and striking a batter out, while hitting 94 mph on his fastball. Recovery has gone well, and as reported by team beat writer Adam McCalvy, Woodruff is now slated to make his Cactus League debut this weekend.

Woodruff pitching on Sunday, even if it is just an inning or two, is a huge step in recovery. This means that he is getting into the swing of making a start every 5th or 6th day as part of the rotation. Of course, we will have to see how his arm and shoulder respond after facing Major League hitters, but, so far so good.

Opening Day is just under two weeks, which could give Woodruff two or three more appearances before the season starts. The team will then have to decide if he is ready to start in the rotation, or hold him back to give him a bit more time to ramp up. Either way though, getting to this point is a big win for "Big Woo."
