Brewers' deadline plans sabotaged by untimely injury

The Brewers may have just lost their top deadline target to a poorly-timed hand injury

At this point in the trade deadline season, you might be sick of hearing the name Eugenio Suárez. The Arizona Diamondbacks' slugging third baseman has been involved in trade rumors for nearly every contender. With the most RBI in all of baseball and the second-most home runs in the National League, Suárez would be a major addition to any lineup.

The Milwaukee Brewers, who have a need for more power and could easily find a way to slot Suárez into their defensive alignment, have been constantly mentioned as a potential fit for the top deadline candidate. However, with at least five teams seriously interested in his services, a bidding war for Suárez is likely to commence, and in the end, adding him to the Brewers' roster will not come cheap.

As such, the conversation of whether or not the Brewers should go "all-in" has once again resurfaced, as it has for nearly every trade deadline of the last seven years, with some arguing that the prospect capital required to acquire Suárez is not worth two or three months of his offensive production. Opponents argue that the Brewers have been one or two moves away from a World Series run several times in the last few years, and Suárez could be the key that unlocks the door to the promised land.

However, after today's Diamondbacks' game against the Detroit Tigers, the Suárez argument may all be for naught.

Eugenio Suárez exits today's game after being hit by pitch on right hand

During the 2025 All-Star Game (ASG), Suárez was drilled in his left hand by Chicago White Sox pitcher Shane Smith. He remained in the game, but notably did not participate in the swing-off that determined the winner of the ASG. The hand appeared fine following the All-Star Break, as Suárez slugged five homers in his first four games after the break.

He cooled off slightly in his last six games, but even still, the power that Suárez has displayed throughout the season has contenders dreaming about what it would be like to add his bat to their lineup.

However, on Monday night, in the ninth inning of the D-backs game against the Tigers, Suárez was once again drilled in the hand, though this time it was his right hand, and it appeared to be much worse than the ASG hit-by-pitch. Suárez was removed from the game and will undergo X-Rays to determine the severity of the injury.

It's not confirmed how close the Brewers were to swinging a deal for the slugging third-baseman prior to his injury on Monday night, but regardless, those talks are presumably on hold as the league waits for news on Suárez's injury. If the Brewers were counting on Suárez at the deadline, they may have to quickly change course.

UPDATE: The Diamondbacks have revealed that Suárez's X-Rays have come back negative. While he may not need a long stint on the IL, today's HBP could still impact his trade value in the coming days.
