After losing superstar shortstop Willy Adames to the Giants via free agency, the Milwaukee Brewers need to establish a plan for the 2025 season. The question all winter long has been who will take over at shortstop when Adames inevitably departs on the open market. To this point, no answer has been provided.

The Brewers have always done a great job of keeping versatile players on their roster so they can play defensive musical chairs on a nightly basis if need be. However, there's something to be said about allowing a player to get comfortable at one position rather than having him split his attention between two or more positions within a few-day stretch.

Brewers insider is not convinced shifting Joey Ortiz or Brice Turang will be Milwaukee's shortstop solution

So far, the likeliest outcome for the Brewers is to roll with Joey Ortiz at shortstop with Brice Turang remaining at second base and either Oliver Dunn, Tyler Black or an external candidate play third base on a nightly basis. In a recent mailbag, Brewers insider Todd Rosiak shared that he's far from convinced Ortiz or Turang will shift off of third and second base, respectively, in the upcoming season.

Instead, Rosiak said that there's no reason to mess with a good thing. That's a fair point, as Ortiz excelled at third while Turang took home a Gold Glove for his defensive prowess at second base. He said that he wouldn't be shocked to see either of these slick-fielding infielders log time at shortstop in 2025, but it's an interesting comment nonetheless.

Rosiak's recommendation is for the Brewrs to sign a stopgap at shortstop until Cooper Pratt is ready to go. There's a fairly significant lack of infielders available on the free agent market that fit the Brewers tight-budget tendencies this winter. Ha-Seong Kim, Jose Iglesias, Paul DeJong or even Amed Rosario are all players that could fit on the Brewers. Someone like Alex Bregman who is going to command a lot of money, though, can be scratched off of the list - a sentiment that's echoed by Rosiak in his mailbag.
