The Milwaukee Brewers have some tough choices to make during spring training. Yes, they have some guys who are mortal locks to make the Opening Day roster and nothing that happens during camp is going to change that. However, there is a certain amount of uncertainty, especially on the pitching side, that remains very unsettled.
Complicating the Brewers' decision making has been a steady stream of injuries that have caused some depth issues when it comes to arms. Thomas Pannone recently joined Aaron Ashby and DL Hall as guys who are likely to miss some time which is far from ideal given that Milwaukee's starting pitching came into spring as a bit of a question mark. The bench hasn't been quite as badly ravaged by injuries, but there is still some things to work out there.
As to who could make it on to the Opening Day roster, that is becoming more and more clear as the Brewers just announced another wave of roster cuts that included top prospects Jeferson Quero and Logan Henderson.
Brewers include Jeferson Quero and Logan Henderson among their latest spring training roster cuts
There are inevitably going to be some fans that will be upset that the Brewers sent Quero back over to minor league camp, but this was always going to happen. Not only is Quero coming off a pretty significant injury, but he wasn't ever going to be taking playing time away from William Contreras who is among the best catchers in baseball. He will get some time in the minors to get up to speed and only then will Milwaukee start figuring out their plan for Quero going forward.
Beyond Quero, the Brewers also sent RHPs Logan Henderson, Carlos Rodriguez, and Grant Anderson along with LHP Grant Wolfram, OF Jared Oliva, and catcher Ramon Rodriguez. The name to circle here is Henderson who many thought could be in play for an Opening Day roster with a strong spring, although his stellar performance thus far in camp does not appear to have swayed Milwaukee thus far.
This is undoubtedly good news for the roster cases of guys like Jacob Misiorowski and Craig Yoho. Both pitchers have been extremely impressive in terms of raw stuff, although Misiorowski is still showing some issues commanding his stuff. Nothing is set in stone just yet as there is still a lot of spring training left, but both Misiorowski's and Yoho's path to playing time in the big leagues just got a lot clearer with the sheer number of arms that got sent back over to minor league camp.
