Atop MLB Pipeline's list of the Top 30 prospects in the Milwaukee Brewers' farm system are a pair of infield prospects who, up until this season, had played alongside each other to begin their professional careers. Holding the No. 1 spot on the list (and the No. 1 spot in all of baseball) is Jesús Made, a 19-year-old switch-hitting super prospect who currently plays shortstop for the Double-A Biloxi Shuckers. His colleague in the No. 2 spot on the list is fellow 19-year-old Luis Peña, the current everyday shortstop for the High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

The two infielders were simultaneously promoted to High-A from Low-A on August 5 of last year, but after Made took a step forward with the T-Rats and Peña took a step back, the two parted ways at the beginning of the 2026 season. However, Peña was off to an incredibly hot start with the Timber Rattlers this season, leading many to already wonder about when his promotion to Double-A may occur. The teenage infielder was slashing .356/.455/.489 with eight RBI through his first 13 games of the 2026 campaign.

Unfortunately, back on April 22, Peña overheated and passed out in the dugout due to dehydration during the T-Rats' away game against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Peña was hospitalized following the incident and didn't play in a game for exactly one month.

Peña returned to game action on May 22, but the Brewers sent him to their Rookie Ball affiliate in the Arizona Complex League (ACL) to ease him back. After just three games in Arizona, during which Peña racked up four hits, including two extra-base hits, the young prospect has now officially rejoined the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and played his first game with the Brewers' High-A affiliate in more than a month yesterday afternoon.

Luis Peña returns to Timber Rattlers' roster after strong return to game action in Arizona Complex League

In yesterday's doubleheader against the Peoria Chiefs, the St. Louis Cardinals' High-A affiliate, Peña served as the Timber Rattlers' designated hitter for game one and didn't play in the second contest of the day, signaling that the organization is still easing him back after his hospitalization back in April. Peña logged just three plate appearances in what was a quiet first game for the T-Rats' offense. He drew a walk in his first plate appearance before grounding into a double play and lining out to shortstop in his next two trips to the plate.

It appears, given Peña's performance in the ACL, that the talented shortstop prospect didn't miss a beat despite a month-long stint on the IL. For a player who has had as much success as Peña's seen through the first two years of his professional career, such a setback is certainly frustrating, but the young infielder appears to have responded well.

Should Peña continue to post the numbers that he did through the first two weeks of the season, his promotion to Double-A will arrive sooner rather than later. Whether that means he will rejoin his partner in crime, Made, or if the move involves Made being promoted to Triple-A remains to be seen. However, for now, it's simply encouraging to see Peña back in High-A after what was a scary situation for the talented Brewers' prospect.
