Brewers' pitching schedule, dwindling Magic Number makes NL Central clinch against Pirates likely

The Milwaukee Brewers are all but guaranteed to win their fourth consecutive NL Central title this year. Needing just two wins over their final 12 games, or two losses from the Chicago Cubs, it's no longer a question of if the Brewers will win the division this year, but rather a question of when.

Brewers fans may have been surprised they didn't see their team shower the home clubhouse with champagne on Friday night after they officially clinched a spot in the postseason. However, the Brewers, who have appeared in the postseason in eight of the last nine years, have their sights set on more than just a playoff berth. With a 10-game lead over the Cubs in the NL Central, the Brewers are waiting until they officially clinch their fourth division title in as many years to pop the champagne. Given how things have lined up for their three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates this week, it looks like that celebration could come sooner rather than later.

For starters, the Brewers' Magic Number to clinch the NL Central is down to just 2. As previously mentioned, that means any combination of Brewers wins and Cubs losses that adds up to two officially gives Milwaukee the NL Central crown. Aiding the Brewers in their quest to clinch the division in Pittsburgh is the fact that the Cubs begin a three-game series with the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves on Monday night.

If Chicago loses Monday night's series opener to the Braves, the Brewers will start their series against the Pirates needing just one win to clinch the NL Central. Pair that with the fact that they are sending their best trio of starting pitchers to the mound in Pittsburgh, and it feels likely that the Brewers will leave the Steel City with the NL Central crown.

Brewers to throw Jacob Misiorowski, Logan Henderson, and Dustin May against Pirates with Magic Number of 2 to clinch NL Central

Over the course of their final four series of the 2026 regular season, three of which will come on the road, the Brewers are not only hoping to clinch the division and the No. 1 overall seed in the playoffs, but they are also hoping their postseason rotation picture gains clarity. Kyle Harrison's recent struggles have certainly thrown a wrench into Milwaukee's rotation plans, but at the same time, Logan Henderson and Dustin May have proven they have what it takes to be a No. 2 and No. 3 starter, respectively, in a postseason rotation.

Therefore, the Brewers' series in Pittsburgh, during which they will throw Jacob Misiorowski, Henderson, and May, in that order, could serve as a preview of what's to come in October. Not only does that trio give Milwaukee a great opportunity to clinch the division against the Pirates, but encouraging performances from all three would go a long way in easing the lingering concerns of the Brewers' fanbase with the postseason drawing nearer.

The combination of a Magic Number of 2 to clinch the NL Central, the Cubs facing off with the Braves, and the Brewers throwing their top three starters gives Milwaukee an excellent opportunity to clinch the division in Pittsburgh. However, no opponent, especially those playing with the freedom of being outside of the playoff picture, can be taken for granted this time of year. Add to that equation the fact that the Los Angeles Dodgers are just 2.5 games back in the race for the NL's No. 1 seed and the Brewers can't let off the gas just yet. With the potential for divided attention as clinching possibilities arrive, the Brew Crew must block out the noise and stick to their "win tonight" mentality.
