Over the last few weeks, the Milwaukee Brewers have been winning plenty of baseball games with essentially nine position players. The combination of Jake Bauers, Daz Cameron, Andruw Monasterio, and Eric Haase — the Brewers’ current bench — has combined for just 14 total starts in the entire month of June. Monasterio in particular has made just four starts since being promoted to the big-league roster on May 9, and has collected just 26 at-bats during that time.

Though the Brewers have gotten away with using their bench sparingly during their recent hot streak, at some point their everyday players will need a break, and having a more productive option on the bench will make it far easier to give their lineup regulars a day off. Despite the opportunities being few, Bauers and Haase have made the most of them, with both maintaining an OPS over .700 and clearly displaying their defensive value. Cameron and Monasterio, on the other hand, have struggled to find their footing at the plate with Cameron slashing .195/.214/.293 and Mona posting an underwhelming slash line of .192/.323/.269.

With the Brewers in need of some improvements on the margins of their roster, they are reportedly turning to an intriguing prospect who is having a head-turning season in Triple-A and has long awaited a shot at the big leagues.

Brewers reportedly calling up Anthony Seigler for MLB debut, according to MLB insider Francys Romero

On Sunday evening, MLB insider Francys Romero, of beisbolfr.com, reported that the Brewers are promoting their versatile prospect Anthony Seigler to the major league roster.

Seigler was drafted as a catcher by the New York Yankees with the 23rd overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. Through his first four seasons in the minor leagues, he played almost solely catcher, making just one two-out appearance in right field. However, in 2023, after Seigler was promoted to Double-A, he started playing second base as well, and a season later, he was only playing second base, making 109 starts at the keystone position for the Yankees' Double-A affiliate, the Somerset Patriots.

After surpassing six years of service time in the minor leagues without being promoted to MLB, Seigler became a minor league free agent this past offseason and signed a minor league deal with the Brewers. He joined the Nashville Sounds, the Brewers' Triple-A affiliate, and started catching games again, and even started covering a new position: third base. This year with the Sounds, Seigler has made 24 starts at second base, 22 starts at catcher, and 11 starts at third base.

While his defensive versatility is intriguing and should help him get more at-bats with the Brewers, Seigler's bat is the real reason that he's reportedly being added to the Brewers' roster. Seigler is having his best season of professional baseball in 2025, slashing .278/.416/.469 with 22 extra-base hits in 62 games this season. Additionally, Seigler is a switch-hitter, has nearly as many walks (48) as strikeouts (50), and has stolen 20 bases on 23 attempts.

Predicting the Brewers' corresponding moves after reported promotion of Anthony Seigler

Despite Romero reporting that Seigler will join the Brewers ahead of their trip to New York to face the Mets, it still isn't known who he will be replacing on the roster. Something to note is that Seigler is not yet on the 40-man roster, so in order for him to join the active 26-man roster, a player will either need to be designated for assignment, traded, or added to the 60-day IL. Unfortunately, there is a likely answer to who will be moved off of the 40-man roster because of some recent injury news.

With the Brewers announcing earlier this week that Garrett Mitchell will be out for 8-10 weeks after re-injuring his shoulder, his transfer to the 60-day IL seems inevitable. The silver lining is that the Brewers won't yet have to release someone from their roster (though they will have to do so when Blake Perkins and Brandon Woodruff return to the active roster in the next few weeks).

In terms of who Seigler will replace on the active roster, it also seems like there is a clear answer: Andruw Monasterio. Not only does Seigler hold a similar defensive profile to Mona (with the added bonus that he can catch too), but Monasterio is also the only bench player with minor league options remaining, meaning the Brewers can option him to Triple-A without first sending him through waivers.

Adding Seigler to the roster won't necessarily have a huge impact on the Brewers' starting lineup, but his versatility, speed, and switch-hitting ability do add an intriguing option to their bench. Additionally, it gives a well-deserved shot at the big leagues to a former first-round pick, who is more than deserving of the opportunity.
