Less than four hours before the first pitch of their Wednesday night contest with the San Francisco Giants, the Milwaukee Brewers still had not announced a starting pitcher. Manager Pat Murphy was asked about the situation several times before and after last night's game, but wouldn't disclose any information other than the fact that a transaction was going to be involved, suggesting that tonight's starter was not on the roster at this time yesterday.
Murph's cryptic responses led Brewers fans to speculate on who would be promoted to the big league roster prior to tonight's game, and one name that continued to pop up was MLB Pipeline's No. 17-ranked prospect Tyson Hardin, who currently resides on the Triple-A Nashville Sounds' roster. Hardin, who has quickly risen through the Brewers' farm system, is currently mowing down hitters in Triple-A after earning an early-season promotion and would have been an exciting addition to the big-league rotation this afternoon.
However, rather than have Hardin make his debut against the Giants this evening, the Brewers will go with a starter who has a bit more big-league experience. As just announced by the team moments ago, the Brewers have recalled left-hander Robert Gasser to start tonight's game. To make room on the roster for Gasser, the Brewers have placed reliever Rob Zastryzny back on the IL.

Brewers promote Robert Gasser, not Tyson Hardin, to MLB roster to serve as tonight's starter against Giants
Part of the reason that Hardin's name gained so much traction is because Gasser had not yet been down in Triple-A for 15 days since he was optioned in late May. Pitchers cannot be recalled to the big-league roster less than 15 days after they were sent down to the minor leagues unless they are replacing an injured player. Therefore, Zastryzny's injury opens the door for the Brewers to promote Gasser prior to the 15-day minimum.
It's a tough development for Zastryzny, who finally joined the big-league roster on May 31 after a pair of early-season injuries -- a shoulder and intercostal muscle strain -- kept him away from a major league mound for the first two months of the 2026 season. Now, before Rob Z could make his first appearance of the campaign, he's back on the IL due to a strain of his left trapezius muscle -- a muscle more commonly referred to as a "trap." The muscle connects the neck/back of the head to the upper back. The IL placement was made retroactively to May 31, so Zastryzny could return to the roster in just 12 days if he's healthy.
Meanwhile, Gasser is set to make his third start of the year for the major league club tonight after making one start in Nashville since his last MLB appearance. Gasser's first two starts this year have been a bit shaky -- the southpaw has surrendered a total of six earned runs in 8.1 combined innings. However, he's been lights out in Triple-A with a 3.38 ERA to prove it.
With Brandon Woodruff, Quinn Priester, and Logan Henderson on the IL, the Brewers are tapping back into their starting pitching depth by turning to Gasser. The team also announced that Coleman Crow will start on Thursday against the Giants, and the trio of Brandon Sproat, Jacob Misiorowski, and Shane Drohan will each make a start against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field this weekend.
