The Milwaukee Brewers are as good as anyone at finding contributors in the bargain bin. This is largely out of necessity given their financial constraints, but the Brewers' ability to piece together competitive rosters from players that other teams have overlooked or undervalued has only been rivaled by the Rays and even that is debatable.
This offseason in particular is putting the Brewers' clearance aisle shopping ability to the test. Not only have they lost Willy Adames and Devin Williams, but their rotation is in a state of flux with Frankie Montas moving on and Wade Miley currently in free agent limbo. At some point, Milwaukee is going to have to make additions to the roster this offseason without spending much at all.
It appears as though that the Brewers are casting a pretty wide net in their search as The Athletic reported that Milwaukee is interested in former MLB pitcher Kyle Hart along with a handful of other teams.
Brewers among teams that have expressed interest in Kyle Hart after his successful stint in Korea
You are forgiven if you don't know who Hart is. He has made a total of four appearances in the big leagues and they all came with the Red Sox in 2020 where he posted a 15.55 ERA in 11 innings of work. To say that those numbers don't inspire the most confidence is putting things mildly.
After his unsuccessful big league debut and languishing in the minors for a next three seasons, Hart decided to give playing overseas in Korea a try in 2024. His gamble paid off as Hart was pretty dominant in the KBO with a 2.69 ERA in 26 starts including a very encouraging 182 strikeouts against just 38 walks in 157 innings of work. The level of competition in Korea isn't comparable to MLB, but those are still impressive enough numbers that Hart is getting a good bit of MLB interest this offseason.
These are the sorts of opportunities that are bound to intrigue the Brewers as Hart is likely just looking for a big league opportunity and wouldn't require a significant financial commitment to sign. Unfortunately for Milwaukee, they are not the only team that has their eyes on Hart this offseason as the Yankees, Astros, Orioles, and Twins are all monitoring his market as well.
Stay tuned, Brewers fans. Even if their pursuit of Hart doesn't work out, it does seem as though Milwaukee is still remaining vigilant in their search for opportunities to make the 2025 Brewers better on a budget.
