It was only a matter of time before the Milwaukee Brewers and manager Pat Murphy agreed to a contract extension that would keep the 2x Manager of the Year as the skipper of the Brew Crew past the 2026 season. However, as the offseason dragged on and Murphy still hadn't put pen to paper, Brewers fans started to wonder what Murphy's plans were for the future. Thankfully, just moments ago, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic broke the news that Murphy and the Brewers have agreed to a contract extension that will keep him in Milwaukee's dugout through at least the 2028 season.

As Rosenthal notes, it's not a three-year contract extension, but rather a new re-worked three year contract, meaning Murphy hasn't added three years to the remaining one year left on his original contract, but rather agreed to one that keeps him with the Brewers for the next three seasons. Rosenthal does note that there is a club option for the 2029 season. Notably, Murphy will be 70 years old during the 2029 season, but the Brewers' skipper has shown no signs of slowing down.

It's excellent news not only for Murphy, but also for Brewers fans. Since taking over for his former boss, Craig Counsell, in 2024, Murphy has won NL Manager of the Year in each of his first two seasons as the top dog in the Brewers' dugout. He and former Brewer Stephen Vogt, who currently manages the Cleveland Guardians, are the only two MLB managers to win back-to-back Manager of the Year Awards in their first two full seasons as managers (Murphy was the interim manager for the San Diego Padres back in 2015), and they've done so in the same two seasons.

Murphy has a unique skill for instilling confidence in his players that has led the Brewers to far outperform expectations in each of his first two seasons as the skipper in Milwaukee. He's constantly reminding baseball fans that games aren't won on paper or in the offseasons, but rather as a result of the players on the field and the people in the organization. Murphy often notes that baseball is about people and personalities, not numbers, straying from the new-school approach that treats players as data points, while still maintaining a respect for the analytics that have reshaped the game. He's the perfect blend of an old-school manager who takes advantage of the resources that have surfaced in recent years.

It's a great day for Brewers fans, who surely had a slight concern that Murphy was unsure of his future beyond the 2026 season. Now, it's confirmed that for at least the next three years, the Brewers will have a highly successful and beloved manager leading their squad.
