Brewers' slugging prospect duo reaches new heights with Double-A dominance

The Milwaukee Brewers' farm system is overflowing with exciting talent, but few prospect pairings are generating as much buzz as former Tennessee Volunteers Andrew Fischer and Blake Burke. The Brewers drafted the two Tennessee products in back-to-back years; Burke was taken with the 34th overall pick in the 2024 draft, and Fischer was the 20th selection in last year's draft. Ironically, Fischer replaced Burke as the Volunteers' everyday first baseman after the latter was drafted by the Brewers, and the former transferred from Ole Miss.

Though the pair never overlapped at Tennessee, they are now teammates with the Brewers' Double-A squad, the Biloxi Shuckers. The two left-handed sluggers have been putting on a home run show in the minor leagues, bringing optimism that the big-league club may finally have a keystone pair of corner infield sluggers (Fischer has converted into an everyday third baseman since joining the Brewers' organization) for years to come -- something they have been lacking in recent years.

Blake Burke sets new Biloxi Shuckers' home run record, Andrew Fischer chasing most homers by a Brewers minor leaguer in a single season

After crushing four homers in his last five games, Fischer now has 33 home runs to his name this season -- he hit 20 in High-A and 13 so far in Double-A. According to the Biloxi Shuckers play-by-play announcer, Javik Blake, his 33 home runs have tied Greg Vaughn for the sixth most by a Brewers minor league player in a single season.

As noted by Blake below, the franchise record for most single-season home runs from a minor leaguer sits at 52, set by Gorman Thomas in 1974. With 40 games remaining, Fischer would need 19 more long balls to tie Thomas, a pace that will certainly be hard to match. However, Fischer's power display is something Milwaukee hasn't seen in their system since the 80s, and if anyone is going to threaten Thomas' record, it is him. It's by no means out of the question that Fischer climbs to the second spot on the list below, which would mean that he crushed at least 38 homers in his first full professional season -- an incredible feat to say the least.

Meanwhile, Burke has launched 29 home runs this season, all of them coming at the Double-A level. He's been especially locked in during July, belting 11 long balls during the month, which includes a three-homer game on July 24 -- a contest where the Shuckers hit seven as a team and tied a franchise record -- and two other multi-homer performances. In his last five games, Burke has crushed an unbelievable eight home runs.

Burke's 29 home runs are a new Shuckers record for the most in a single season, passing Corey Ray who previously set the record back in 2018. Additionally, Burke's 40 total home runs throughout his Double-A career are the most ever hit by a single player in Shuckers' history, passing Xavier Warren, who launched 39 longballs throughout his time in Biloxi. More impressively, Burke has only played in 123 Double-A games, whereas Warren logged 349 games with the Shuckers.

Fischer and Burke's incredible display of power will be something to watch over the course of the next two months, especially as conversations regarding their promotions to Triple-A intensify. Regardless of what happens, both have established themselves as two of the Brewers' most exciting prospects and represent hope for a pair of sluggers that could impact the big-league club for years to come.
