The World Baseball Classic means many different things to players. Whether it’s the pride of representing their country with its name across their chest or the chance to compete against the world’s best in a high-stakes tournament, both players and fans clearly love the environment.

For Carlos Rodriguez of Team Nicaragua, his mindset between World Baseball Classic appearances is drastically different. Three years ago, he was coming off an impressive minor league season that earned him Minor League Pitcher of the Year honors from the Milwaukee Brewers. In the 2023 WBC, he delivered four solid innings of one-run ball against a stacked Cuba lineup.

Rodriguez carried that momentum into another outstanding minor league season, once again earning Milwaukee's Minor League Pitcher of the Year award. He made his MLB debut in 2024, but over the past two seasons he has struggled to find consistent success in the big leagues. At times, he has been used in difficult situations, such as being asked to throw 50 pitches after a lengthy rain delay in Pittsburgh, when he had already thrown 24 beforehand.

Looking ahead to 2026, Rodriguez enters a pivotal year with the Brewers, as he has just one minor league option remaining. He has little left to prove in the minors, but faces an uphill climb to break into Milwaukee’s deep starting rotation. Perhaps his strong showing in the 2026 WBC will help move him up the depth chart.

Carlos Rodriguez was once again nails for Team Nicaragua in the World Baseball Classic

On Sunday, March 8, Rodriguez made his 2026 WBC debut by once again allowing just one run over four innings, this time against Team Israel. Nicaragua ultimately lost the game, a familiar result for a team still searching for its first win in WBC history, and has now been eliminated from advancing past pool play.

Despite the result, Rodriguez’s performance offered a positive takeaway. By once again delivering a strong outing on the international stage, he showed the poise and ability that once made him one of the most promising arms in the Brewers’ system. With the tournament soon to be behind him, Rodriguez will return to Milwaukee hoping to carry that momentum into the season and make a stronger push for a role on the pitching staff in what will be a pivotal year of his career.
