Some players are beloved by fans, including of the Milwaukee Brewers, because they are just that good. For others, it is because of a key moment in franchises history, like David Freese having monster moments in the 2011 World Series. Others yet are guys lucky enough to end up with the hometown team that they grew up rooting for when they were learning the game. And a small few, are simply loved for their name and the ability to create a fun nickname out of it.
Nicknames in baseball go back to the beginning of the sport itself. Cy Young, Smiling Tim Keefe, and Babe Ruth are just some of the numerous examples of Hall of Famers known by nicknames. In Brewers lore, Nyjer Morgan is better known as Tony Plush. He is one of those guys that had some huge moments in both the regular season and postseason. Then there is the case of former Brewers infielder Jace Peterson, known online as "On Base Jace".
Brewers bring back "On Base" Jace Peterson in a special advisor role
As reported on Tuesday, Jace Peterson is returning to the Brewers, not as a player but in an advisory role. Peterson was seen in Milwaukee's clubhouse down at spring training before his role with the team was revealed by Brewers beat writer Curt Hogg. Given Peterson's background as a utility guy with defensive chops, it is likely he will at least be giving some advice to the Brewers' infielders regarding the idiosyncrasies and responsibilities at each position in the dirt.
Peterson played for the Brewers from 2020 to 2022, appearing in 232 games over that time. As the nickname suggests, Peterson had an innate ability to get on base in numerous ways, where despite his career .226 batting average, he was nearly 10 points better in getting on base, with a career .317 on base percentage, including 310 career walks. Peterson last saw action in the big leagues in 2024 with the Diamondbacks before they released him last April.
Peterson's best years came with the Brewers, including his best season in 2022, where he racked up 2.2 WAR despite some questionable offensive output. While it is unclear of what exactly his role with the team will be, Peterson's baseball career does appear to be officially moving on to the next step by hanging up the cleats and joining the Brewers front office.
