At the beginning of the season, the Milwaukee Brewers Low-A affiliate, the Carolina Mudcats, had five teenage middle infielders, all with an extreme amount of upside. Brewers top-10 prospects Jesús Made and Luis Peña received the most attention of the bunch, while breakout candidates Josh Adamczewski and Filippo Di Turi have been recognized for their impressive starts to the season. However, it was 19-year-old Luiyin Alastre who was the first of the group to be promoted to High-A, joining the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

While a majority of his professional starts have been at shortstop, third base, and second base, Alastre isn't purely an infielder. In fact, in his first start for the Timber Rattlers, which came on Tuesday night, Alastre started in left field, a position that he frequented in Carolina while Made, Peña, Di Turi, and Adamczewski competed for spots on the infield dirt. Alastre's positional versatility is a big reason why he was promoted to High-A, as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are searching for more production from their outfielders. Regardless, Alastre's promotion is notable given that he has yet to celebrate his 20th birthday.

Alastre was part of the Brewers' 2023 international free agent signing class, which was headlined by Di Turi, Yophery Rodríguez, whom the Brewers traded in early April for Quinn Priester, and shortstop Kevin Ereu, who has yet to appear in a game stateside. Alastre appeared in 42 games in the Dominican Summer League in 2023 and 50 games in the Arizona Complex League a season ago, where he posted underwhelming OPS numbers of .762 and .685, respectively.

It's certainly a quick promotion for Alastre, who played just 17 games of Low-A ball before being called up. However, he was off to a hot start in Low-A, slashing .311/.391/.508 with seven extra-base hits and 13 RBIs, and had a particularly strong week leading up to his promotion (see X post above).

At 19 years old, Alastre will be the second-youngest player in High-A behind Leo De Vries — the 17th best prospect in baseball. It likely won't be an easy transition for Alastre, who has yet to play 20 games above Rookie ball, but if he can post league-average numbers as a teenager in High-A, he should shoot up the Brewers' prospect rankings.
