Brewers’ teenage outfield prospect continues scalding stretch since midseason promotion

The Milwaukee Brewers' decision to part ways with two Top-30 outfield prospects in Alexander Frias and Josiah Ragsdale in their trade deadline deal for Dustin May and JoJo Romero with the St. Louis Cardinals was not only a signal of the front office's belief in the 2026 squad, but it also demonstrated their faith in the organization's ability to continue producing talent in their farm system.

Though many Brewers fans were hoping the front office would swing big for reigning back-to-back AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers, and were therefore disappointed when he landed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee still parted with more significant prospect capital at this year's trade deadline than they have in recent seasons. Luring their division rivals, the Cardinals, into trading two of their most valuable arms unsurprisingly came at a premium prospect cost, but with World Series aspirations, the Brewers were willing to pay it.

Even still, for an organization that relies on prospect talent more than most -- a product of MLB's broken financial landscape and the cheaper salaries of players at the beginning of their careers -- parting ways with a pair of talented outfield prospects is no easy task. That said, Milwaukee's knack for developing talent in their minor league system should have fans feeling encouraged about their ability to "replace" Frias and Ragsdale in the near future.

Already, one teenage outfield prospect who is the same age as Frias and competing at the same level, is demonstrating that Milwaukee's pipeline of prospect talent remains strong even after their more aggressive trade deadline.

Brewers' prospect Brailyn Antunez is proving Milwaukee's future outfield picture remains strong even after trade deadline

Back in January of 2025, the Brewers added 29 international free agents to their organization. It's an area of player acquisition that the Brewers have been especially strong in over this recent period of sustained success. The international free agent market has brought players like Jackson Chourio, Abner Uribe, Luis Lara, Jesús Made, Luis Peña, and Frias to the Brewers' organization in recent years. Their 2025 class was highlighted by three prospects who ranked in MLB Pipeline's list of the top 50 international prospects that year: OF Kenny Fenelon (No. 36), OF Brailyn Antunez (No. 42), and SS Cristopher Acosta (No. 45).

Of that trio, Antunez has found the most success in the Brewers' minor league system thus far. Still just 18 years old, Antunez began the season in the Arizona Complex League (Rookie Ball) where he impressed with 27 extra-base hits and an .887 OPS in 58 games. Following the completion of the ACL season in late July, Antunez was promoted to Low-A, joining the Wilson Warbirds for the final two months of the season.

Since his promotion to Low-A, Antunez has caught fire at the plate. In 25 games with the Warbirds, the teenage outfielder has crushed seven homers, six doubles, stolen nine bases, and is maintaining an incredible 1.194 OPS. Yesterday morning, MLB Pipeline named Antunez the "hottest hitting prospect" in the Brewers' farm system right now.

Antunez's hot streak arrived at the perfect time. After watching Frias and Ragsdale head to the Cardinals' farm system, Brewers fans can take solace in the fact that their team's ability to develop prospect talent remains strong. Keep an eye out for Antunez in the coming years, as the combination of his prospect pedigree and early-career breakout could have him rising up prospect rankings in the near future.
