Brewers win streak sends Red Sox outfielder into a spiral that's only getting worse

The Milwaukee Brewers swept the Boston Red Sox this week and won back-to-back games in extra innings, which is beginning to frustrate Red Sox outfielder Rob Refsnyder.

The Milwaukee Brewers have been on a streak of winning close games as the month of May comes to a close. They are now 29-28 and riding a four-game win streak after sweeping the Boston Red Sox this week. The sweep included two walk-offs in extra innings and was highlighted by a Christian Yelich walk-off grand slam on Tuesday.

It was a rejuvenating series for the Brewers and a defeating one for the scuffling Red Sox. Monday's game sent Red Sox outfielder Rob Refsnysder into a bit of a shame spiral, and looking at how the rest of the series played out, it's only going to get worse for him.

Rob Refsnyder's frustration

After losing by a final score of 3-2 to the Brewers on Monday, Refsnyder was not shy about sharing his frustration in a postgame interview. "We still lost. I don't really care. I don't really care about promise. We lost. It's frustrating," said Refsnyder when asked about the silver linings of a near comeback. “I’m tired of losing. I’m tired of losing close games. We just need to figure it out and win some games. Bottom line."

Refsnyder said it was "disappointing" that the Red Sox didn't come through to support starter Garrett Crochet. Crochet has a 2.04 ERA this season after being part of a blockbuster offseason trade. But still, Boston is just 6-6 when he takes the mound.

"It's not for lack of effort or work ethic, game planning; it's just we're not doing it. We suck right now," Refsnyder concluded.

Milwaukee's back-to-back extra inning walk-off wins

Refsnyder's frustration for losing close games came on Monday...then the Brewers won in extra innings on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday night, Christian Yelich blasted a walk-off grand slam for the first walk-off home run of his big league career. The Brewers won 5-1. On Wednesday, the Brewers overcame an early deficit and got two runs in the 10th inning to win 6-5. Caleb Durbin was the hero with a sacrifice fly that scored Sal Frelick.

If Boston was struggling after one loss to the Brewers, I can't imagine what the clubhouse is like after the Crew completed the sweep.

At the end of the day, playoff teams win close games. It's the teams that are riddled with injuries and still find a way to win that end up playing meaningful baseball in October. The Brewers may be turning a corner in that area.

The last time the Brewers won consecutive extra-inning walk-offs, it was May 16 and 19 of 2000 at County Stadium. Ronnie Belliard and Henry Blanco were the heroes in those games, as pointed out by MLB.com Brewers beat reporter Adam McCalvy on X.

Nine teams in the National League have a better run differential than the Brewers. But if they can keep winning the close ones like they have done this week, none of that will matter. They now turn their attention to a tough test in the Philadelphia Phillies this weekend. DL Hall is set to open game one, facing off against Taijuan Walker of the Phillies. First pitch on Friday night is set for 5:45 p.m. CT.
