Trades in Major League Baseball are unlike those in any other sport. Because teams can only deal Competitive Balance Round A or B draft picks, most trades are built around prospects, whether they’re fresh off their MLB debut, on the cusp of reaching the big leagues, still developing in the minors, or in dire need of a change of scenery.

For the Milwaukee Brewers, two deals with the Boston Red Sox over the past calendar year have included Competitive Balance picks heading to Boston. The first came last April, when Milwaukee sent a Round A pick to acquire right-hander Quinn Priester. The second involved a Round B pick, along with Caleb Durbin and much of the Brewers’ remaining infield depth, in exchange for left-handers Kyle Harrison and Shane Drohan, and infielder David Hamilton.

One key difference in the Brewers’ most recent trade with the Red Sox was that this time around Milwaukee didn’t have the same surplus of premium draft capital. In 2025, the Brewers still ended up with five selections within the top 100 picks, including a compensation pick after the first round when Willy Adames signed with the San Francisco Giants and a supplementary second-round pick after they were unable to sign Chris Levonas the previous year.

Looking ahead to the 2026 MLB Draft, the Brewers won’t have that same ability to add premium talent, placing even greater importance on the selections they do hold.

After having selections at 20, 32, 59, 68, and 94 a year prior, Milwaukee will have just two picks in the top 100 of the 2026 MLB Draft. In the first round, they will select 25th overall. Their second-round pick then comes in at 66. Right now, they won't select in the third round until 102 overall.

Before the Durbin trade, Milwaukee’s Competitive Balance Round B selection was slotted at 67 overall, though Zac Gallen’s pending free agency decision has the potential to push that pick back to 68.

Regardless, that selection now belongs to the Red Sox, who needed the added draft capital after forfeiting their second-round pick for signing Ranger Suárez, a player who had previously received a qualifying offer from the Philadelphia Phillies.

For Milwaukee, using their Competitive Balance Round A pick to acquire Priester made sense because they still had multiple high-value selections to work with. In the Durbin trade, however, they aren’t as fortunate, meaning they’ll need to maximize the impact of every pick they have in the 2026 draft.
