A rookie season is a time for firsts. Your first big-league hit is a memorable moment, as is the moment you receive your first MLB paycheck. And then, of course, you have your first-ever trip to the major-league injured list.

Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Cooper Pratt is getting the full pro ballplayer experience right now, having sat out of action since August 9 with a right hamstring strain. Even when it first occurred, there was hope (from both him and manager Pat Murphy) that this IL stay wouldn't be a long one, despite some reports suggesting he'd be out until late August; now, we know for sure that the severity of the injury was thankfully on the lower end of the scale.

Pratt will be joining the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers tonight for what should be a brief rehab assignment. It'll be his first taste of High-A action since the 2024 season.

Cooper Pratt is nearing timely return to Brewers ahead of crucial weekend series

Sometimes, near-minimum stays on the IL don't require a rehab assignment at all. When it comes to lower-body injuries, though, it's best to make sure that a player is approaching 100% before returning to action, since it's exceedingly easy to reaggravate (or even worsen) something as fickle as a hamstring strain.

It's telling that Pratt is joining the Timber Rattlers rather than one of the higher-level affiliates in the organization. They're playing at home this week -- as are the Brewers -- a mere 90 minutes up I-41 from American Family Field. In other words, the plan is clearly to let the rookie test out his hamstring until he feels ready to return, at which point the Crew can call him back up and play him immediately.

Once he does return, Pratt should immediately slide back into his role as the team's starting shortstop. Murphy deployed a rotation of Brice Turang (who also missed time with a knee injury), Joey Ortiz, and David Hamilton in his stead, though it's clear the team is at its best when the rookie is manning the six.

Through his first 44 games of MLB action, Pratt is hitting .272/.352/.368 (102 wRC+) with 10 stolen bases. Combined with his exemplary defense, he's already been worth 1.2 fWAR, which is the eighth-best mark among all Brewers position players this year. The only players on the roster who have tallied more fWAR per game are Jackson Chourio and Turang.

Getting him back will also allow Murphy to use Ortiz and Hamilton more frequently at third base, which is their best positions (especially when you're talking about the former). With any luck, we should see Pratt back in Milwaukee before the crucial upcoming weekend series against the Braves.
