Corbin Burnes' cryptic social media post will have Brewers fans ready to throw up
While the 2024 season was largely a success for the Milwaukee Brewers, it didn't come without some pain. Not only are Brewers fans bracing for the real possibility that Willy Adames is leaving and that Milwaukee could trade Devin Williams, but there are still fans reeling from the Corbin Burnes trade last offseason to the Orioles.
Trading Burnes certainly wasn't unexpected given his troubled relationship with the team and the fact that the Brewers very often move guys once they get expensive, but that doesn't mean it didn't suck. In Burnes' six seasons in Milwaukee, he posted a 3.26 ERA, made three All-Star teams, and took home the NL Cy Young in 2021. Losing a player of that caliber is never going to feel good no matter the reasoning behind it.
However, Brewers fans' pain regarding Burnes may not be over just yet. After Wednesday's World Series finale which saw the Dodgers emerge victorious, Burnes put out a very interesting emoji-only tweet that could be a hint of his free agency ambitions.
Corbin Burnes' possible offseason hint is nightmare fuel for Brewers fans
No logical Brewers fan actually thinks there is any chance that Milwaukee would bring back Burnes this offseason. While Burnes is a free agent, if the Brewers "can't" afford to keep Adames, there is no world that they can afford Burnes who has been predicted to get an almost $250 million deal in free agency.
However, why does it always have to be the Dodgers?! LA has earned their reputation of being an organization that buys wins with all of their big market dollars and there is no shortage of baseball fans who are very put off by Ohtani's heavily deferred contract that has allowed the Dodgers to go absolutely wild. The Dodgers need starting pitching and apparently don't care how much they spend, Burnes is the best starting pitcher on the market, and now we have Burnes openly flirting with them. Absolutely gross.
We will probably never truly know what Burnes was trying to convey with his string of eyeball emojis. It isn't unreasonable to think that he just wanted to troll the internet. It is also worth mentioning that other teams like the Mets and Orioles are more heavily favored in the Burnes sweepstakes heading into the offseason. Neither of those options feel great, but either would be better than seeing the Dodgers gobble up another top talent.
Still, it sure seems like that nightmare scenario could come to pass if Burnes' tweet is anything more than just having some fun on social media.
