The Milwaukee Brewers have gone through their fair share of third basemen over the years. Since 2019, players like Travis Shaw, Eric Sogard, Mike Brosseau, Brian Anderson, Jace Peterson, Luis Urías, Andruw Monasterio, Vinny Capra, Oliver Dunn, Caleb Durbin, Joey Ortiz, and David Hamilton have all had opportunities at the hot corner for the Brew Crew.

While former Brewers such as Shaw, Sogard, and Peterson have since retired from professional baseball and are all set to return to American Family Field for the Alumni Legends Game in late July, several other ex-Milwaukee third basemen are still working to make it back to the big leagues. One of them is Urías, aka "Wicho", who spent three and a half seasons with the Brewers from 2020 through 2023, and now is set to make his 2026 season debut with the reigning American League champion Toronto Blue Jays.

Luis Urías joins Blue Jays' roster after recent trade from Arizona Diamondbacks

Not too long ago, Urías had some of his best years with the Brewers. He came over with LHP Eric Lauer in the November 2019 trade with the San Diego Padres and accumulated a 6.3 bWAR during his tenure while hitting 40 home runs and posting a 102 OPS+. 2021 was his best season where he belted 23 long balls and drove in 75 RBI.

Since being traded by Milwaukee to the Boston Red So in exchange for RHP Bradley Blalock at the 2023 trade deadline, Urías has had big league stints with three other teams. He spent the second half of the 2023 season with Boston, appeared in 41 games for the Seattle Mariners in 2024, and got into 96 games with the Athletics a season ago.

With the Athletics, he slashed just .230/.315/.338 with eight home runs. As a result, after a brief stint with the Brewers' Triple-A squad last September, Urías joined the Arizona Diamondbacks during the offseason on a minor league deal, but he recently exercised his upward mobility clause and was subsequently traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. An upward mobility clause is a contract wrinkle that allows players to be exposed to other organizations, but with the caveat of the acquiring team having to place them on the 40-man roster.

Now on the Blue Jays, Urías is patiently awaiting his 2026 MLB debut. He didn't appear in Toronto's game on Monday, June 22, against the Houston Astros, but the opportunity should come sooner rather than later.
