"Tough times." That's how Milwaukee Brewers' manager Pat Murphy described what his team is going through right now following their fifth consecutive loss on Sunday afternoon. However, the early-season losing streak was not the only thing Murphy was referencing two days ago.
Already without Jackson Chourio, Andrew Vaughn, Quinn Priester, Rob Zastryzny, and Jared Koenig due to injuries, the Brewers are now adding team leader Christian Yelich to the injured list. Yelich was pulled from Sunday's game with what was initially reported as a hamstring injury. However, a report from MLB.com Brewers' beat reporter Adam McCalvy just moments ago revealed that Yelich instead suffered a left groin strain and has now been added to the 10-day injured list.
It's a massive blow for the Brewers' offense, that has already been scuffling as of late. Following a red-hot start to the season, much of the team's current losing streak can be attributed to a lack of offense during the second two-thirds of their series against the Boston Red Sox and the first two-thirds of their three-game set with the Washington Nationals. Losing Yelich, who was off to an excellent start, with a .314 batting average and .826 OPS to prove it, only complicates the Brewers' attempt to turn around what has been a tough week of games.
Christian Yelich placed on 10-day IL with left groin strain, Greg Jones promoted to big-league roster
According to McCalvy, utility man Greg Jones has been promoted to the major league roster to replace the injured Yelich. Jones, who was the Tampa Bay Rays' first-round pick back in 2019, joined the Brewers this offseason as a minor league free agent signing. He had a tough showing in Spring Training, but has since caught fire with the Triple-A Nashville Sounds.
In Jones' first 13 games with the Sounds, he's slashing .317/.462/.390, good for an .852 OPS that should at least give Brewers fans a little bit of encouragement about his addition to the major league roster. Throughout his career, Jones has appeared in just nine major league games -- six with the Colorado Rockies back in 2024, and three with the Chicago White Sox last year. However, most of those appearances came as a late-game defensive replacement, resulting in Jones having just eight career MLB plate appearances.
The 28-year-old switch-hitting Jones is an incredibly versatile defender, with experience at both middle infield positions and all three outfield spots throughout his minor league career. Though not known for his power, Jones did rack up 26 homers in 160 games of minor league ball between the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Additionally, he's also an excellent base stealer, already swiping seven bases in 13 games with the Sounds this year.
Jones was not a member of the 40-man roster prior to today, so as a result, the Brewers have placed left-handed reliever Rob Zastryzny on the 60-day IL to open a spot. Zastryzny was battling a shoulder strain, but experienced a setback in the form of an intercostal muscle strain during his rehab process.
It's no doubt a tough stretch for the Brewers, and finding enough offense to win ballgames in the absence of Chourio, Vaughn, and now Yelich will be difficult. If ever there was a time that the team needed to be "undaunted," it's right now.
