Here are all of the rumored landing spots for Willy Adames this offseason so far
For the past three-and-a-half years, the Milwaukee Brewers have had Willy Adames holding down the shortstop position in their everyday lineup. He's consistently been one of the best offensive players at the position in the league, regularly hitting between 20 and 30 home runs while driving in between 80 and 112 runs across the past few years.
Adames, 29, put together one of the stronger walk-year performances we've seen in a while, hitting a career-high 33 doubles, 32 home runs, 112 RBI and 21 stolen bases while also sporting a .794 OPS and 118 OPS+. Through and through, he's an offensive machine and there are going to be a boatload of teams pursuing him in free agency this winter.
Willy Adames has potential landing spots all over MLB
The 2024-25 MLB offseason may still be in its infancy, but the hot stove doesn't care about all that. The stove is heating up by the day on Adames and his market, so let's take a look around the rumor mill and identify which teams are linked to him early on in free agency.
Milwaukee Brewers
Of course the Brewers aren't going to just lay down and let another team swipe Adames out from under them. This club is familiar to Adames, which does matter. Rumor has it he's willing to at least consider taking less money to re-sign in Milwaukee, but that still means the Brewers need to come close to offers he's receiving elsewhere and there hasn't been any indication that that is in the cards so far this offseason.
Atlanta Braves
MLB Network's Jon Morosi said in a recent segment that a number of teams will be in on Adames, with the Braves getting a mention as a potential fit. ESPN's David Schoenfield agrees, saying that Atlanta is "the best fit" for the shortstop. With former Brewer Orlando Arcia getting the majority of the reps at shortstop over the past few years, there's a clear need for an upgrade as he hit just .218 last year with a .271 OBP.
San Francisco Giants
In MLBTR's top 50 free agent list that comes with predictions, each of the four panelists picked the Giants as Adames' next home. Rookie standout Tyler Fitzgerald held down the position nicely in 2024, but he's a utility player capable of taking on defensive assignments elsewhere. The Giants haven't had a stud shortstop since Brandon Crawford's peak, so there's certainly room for him on the roster.
Los Angeles Dodgers
As of right now, only two teams are rumored to have made an official offer to Adames so far: the Dodgers and the Mets. We'll touch on the Mets in a minute, but the Dodgers are a team that can easily afford Adames' next contract while also having a spot wide open for him in their infield. Mookie Betts is reportedly going to shift back to the infield next season, but Morosi said in his segment that Betts could play second base while Adames becomes L.A.'s shortstop.
New York Mets
With rumors circling that Adames could entertain a position change on his next club, the Mets immediately made all the sense in the world. He could sign with the club and shift over to third base, where his range and strong throwing arm would fit well, despite the fact that he has no experience over there. With future Hall of Famer Francisco Lindor holding down shortstop for the Mets, Adames' best fit would be at third.
Boston Red Sox
Both Morosi and MLB Network counterpart Mark Feinsand named the Red Sox as a club that will make a push for Adames' services this winter. Boston has a whole lot of uncertainties at shortstop with Trevor Story's health being a massive question mark. If/when he hits the shelf in 2025, Adames could be there to fill the gap.
