How Jake Bauers' lingering injury could impact Brewers' postseason lineup

With less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Milwaukee Brewers have already secured a playoff berth and could clinch their fourth consecutive National League Central division title tonight (the Brewers clinch the division with a win and a Chicago Cubs loss). But Milwaukee is still chasing the best record in baseball, which would give them the No. 1 overall seed, a first-round bye, and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

As a result, manager Pat Murphy hasn’t let off the gas. He continues to approach each game with a “win tonight” mentality, but he’s doing so intelligently, shifting players around and prioritizing rest for those who need to be at their freshest come October.

One of those players is 2026 breakout slugger Jake Bauers, who has been dealing with shin splints since May. After taking a few games off at the end of August due to the pain increasing, Bauers hasn't been improving as expected and has been used strictly as an infielder since September 6.

Following the recent series against the Cincinnati Reds, Murphy revealed that Bauers has been unable to play the outfield because of his nagging injury. This year, Bauers has logged his most innings in the outfield since joining the Brewers in 2024, but with the issue lingering this long and experiencing a prolonged flare-up, it raises the question of how Milwaukee’s postseason lineup could be impacted if the injury persists.

Come playoff time, there’s little doubt that Milwaukee’s strongest offensive lineup features Bauers in right field and Andrew Vaughn at first base. Setting the shin splints aside, at baseline that alignment certainly represents a defensive downgrade compared to having Sal Frelick or Luis Lara take Bauers’ spot in the outfield, but if maximizing offensive production is the priority, Bauers and Vaughn need to be in the starting lineup.

However, if Bauers is currently unable to play the outfield, what will Milwaukee do come October? Will the Brewers have him tough it out and sacrifice some defense, or keep him in the infield and remove Vaughn from the lineup? The latter could obviously have an offensive impact, but Milwaukee has seen first-hand in recent games just how valuable elite defense in right field can be, with Lara coming through with several game-changing plays in recent weeks.

All of this makes Bauers’ injury a major storyline to monitor heading into the playoffs. Whether he’s able to return to the outfield or not could have a significant impact on how Murphy constructs his lineup come October.
