Insane Bleacher Report trade pitch has Brewers sending William Contreras to AL Contender

With the Boston Red Sox in dire need of a catcher, one writer at Bleacher Report has suggested that they trade for a player who is certainly not on the trading block.

While the Red Sox do have an exciting young catcher in Connor Wong, who broke out in 2024 with a 110 OPS+ season, their catching room is suddenly in disarray after Wong went down with a pinkie injury on Monday. The Red Sox, who have playoff aspirations this season, are scrambling to find another solution at catcher, with glove-first catcher Carlos Narvaez making starts in the interim.

Boston did sign veteran catcher and former Brewer, Yasmani Grandal, to a minor-league contract yesterday with the hopes that he can serve as an improvement over Narvaez, who is a career .237 hitter. However, neither Grandal nor Narvaez is a long-term solution behind the dish, and with uncertainty surrounding the timeline for Wong's return, some Boston fans are calling for a shocking solution involving the Milwaukee Brewers' All-Star catcher.

The Milwaukee Brewers are not shopping William Contreras

Perhaps the recent trade for Quinn Priester has Red Sox fans believing that the Brewers would be willing to trade William Contreras, but in no world would it make any sense for the Brewers to send their catcher to Boston. No matter how desperate the Red Sox may be, there is no logical trade that would send Contreras to Boston.

A Contreras trade would leave the Brewers with several uninspiring veteran options at the catching position, in major-league backup Eric Haase and Jorge Alfaro, who is currently handling the catching duties for the Nashville Sounds in Triple-A. The Brewers do have an exciting prospect catcher in Jeferson Quero, but he's coming off a 2024 season lost to shoulder surgery, leaving his future uncertain.

Simply put, the Brewers are not in position to deal Contreras, who not only serves as their (almost) everyday catcher, but also is a leader in the clubhouse. Barring a surprising extension, Contreras' name could come up in trade talks in a few years’ time, but with him under contract for two more seasons after this year, and the Brewers still playoff hopefuls, the timing is not right.

Boston traded away Kyle Teel, their top catching prospect, for Garrett Crochet and now has to face the consequences. It's possible that they will be able to swing a trade for another big-league catcher, such as William's brother Wilson or Minnesota Twins' veteran Christian Vazquez as the Bleacher Report article suggests, but the solution to their catching woes will not come from the Brewers.
