With the Milwaukee Brewers putting together a season for the ages, fan enthusiasm around the team is at all-time highs. While that has already resulted in tangible benefits in terms of ticket sales for the Brewers, there has been another side effect that many fans may not be aware of in the sports card collecting hobby.
There have certainly been Brewers players that have been players that have been popular among collectors before. Jackson Chourio's rookie cards were in high demand just last season. However, between Jesus Made getting his Bowman 1st card this year combined with all of the success Milwaukee is having on the field, card collecting is hot among Brewers fans right now.
If you are one of those fans who also happens to have a lot of spare cash laying around that you aren't spending on playoff tickets, you will want to check out this brand new collaboration between the card grading company PSA and MLBPA to create a special card auction called the Players Collection that will begin on September 30.
Jared Koenig and Trevor Megill took part in ground-breaking Players Collection that might change card collecting forever
The way the Players Collection works is pretty simple. A bunch of MLB players around the league were invited to open some really high end products including Topps Definitive, Topps Luminaries, and Topps Diamond Icons on video. From those pulls, 60 cards were selected to be graded and put in the auction. Each card will have a link to a unique video of the card being pulled as well as any reactions/comments as well.
The Brewers had two representatives among those cracking packs, relievers Jared Koenig and Trevor Megill, and they worked together in the above trailer with hilarious results. Clearly both players are card collectors and knew as soon as they opened a 1/1 Masataka Yoshida patch auto that they had hit a really rare (and very cool) card.
The card collecting hobby is already very driven by chasing specific players and/or cards and what this new auction does is add a new and very novel element. Not only will fans be bidding on some big time cards, but they will have certification that they were opened by such players as Corbin Carroll, Bobby Witt Jr., Justin Turner, Zach Neto, and others. If you want to try your hand at bidding on some of the cards that Koenig and Megill opened, including that Yoshida 1/1, make sure you check out the auction at the end of the month.
