2 Garrett Mitchell trades that the Brewers could explore to acquire starting pitching
Rumors indicate that the Brewers could trade from their outfield surplus to address pitching needs
Fansided MLB Insider Robert Murray recently reported that teams are calling the Milwaukee Brewers about Garrett Mitchell. It was one rival executive's belief that Mitchell could be used as a trade piece for them to acquire starting pitching.
Right now there is no indication that the Brewers want to trade Garrett Mitchell. Trading him now in order to improve the 2024 team comes with long term effects on the organization, but with the lack of pitching options that are reliably providing Milwaukee length it may have to be done.
Here are two trade possibilities that the Brewers could explore in using Garrett Mitchell in order to aquire starting pitching.
Trade #1: Milwaukee Brewers use Garrett Mitchell in a trade package for Erick Fedde
The Brewers are in need of pitchers that can provide them length. Erick Fedde would give them that and more. Just two of Fedde's 20 appearances this year haven't gone more than five innings and he has pitched to a 2.98 ERA. With Freddy Peralta struggling this year, Fedde would immediately slot in as the Brewers top pitching option.
In addition to helping the Brewers right now, Fedde is also controllable through the 2025 season at a modest $7.5 million salary. If the White Sox asking price is Garrett Mitchell then at least the Brewers will get multiple years of Fedde in exchange for sacrificing years of control of Mitchell. Milwaukee targeting Fedde's teammate Garrett Crochet seems unlikely especially in light of him reportedly demanding a contract extension before pitching in October.
Trade #2: Garrett Mitchell is used to acquire multiple starting pitchers from the Los Angeles Angels
The Angels are in clear sell mode this year and they have a pair of southpaws whom are available. Veteran starting pitcher Tyler Anderson (2.91 ERA after 20 GS) would benefit the Brewers this year and has a $13 million salary for 2025 whereas Reid Detmers is struggling this year (optioned to Triple-A) but has a ton of upside and would be a great controllable project for Milwaukee.
If the Brewers were to discuss a package deal for both Anderson and Detmers they would need to include additional players outside of Garrett Mitchell. A deal of this nature would come with sacrificing parts of their future but in exchange Milwaukee would bolster their rotation this year and for years to come.
The MLB trade deadline is July 30. It will be interesting to see if the Brewers deal from a position of strength and trade Garrett Mitchell or if they hold onto him, especially in the wake of Christian Yelich's injury.
