Brewers prospect set to move up prospects lists #3: C Matt Wood
The Brewers 4th round pick out of Penn State last year, Matt Wood has made a lot of noise in his first full season in pro ball. MLB Pipeline has Wood ranked 24th in the Brewers system while Baseball America has him 23rd. Wood is going to find himself ranked much higher soon.
Wood started the 2023 season in Low-A Carolina as one of the older players on a very young team. He displayed leadership skills and managed a talented young pitching staff incredibly well. After a month, he earned a promotion to High-A Wisconsin.
Combined this season, Wood is hitting .293/.431/.439 with seven doubles, three homers, 28 walks to just 26 strikeouts, and a .870 OPS.
Wood is a quality defensive catcher with the ability to stick behind the plate and any kind of offense you can get from your catcher is considered a bonus. Wood is a solid hitter with good plate discipline and the ability to hit for some power from the left side of the plate.
The scarcity of offense at his position makes his offensive output all the more impressive and worthy of a higher ranking on prospect lists. Wood was a college performer but a 4th round pick, which contributed to his somewhat lower prospect ranking. But now that we have a substantial enough sample size of at-bats in pro ball, it's clear that Wood is worthy of a higher ranking.
